Read More	Smith Funeral Home LTD. & Crematory Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather Leon J. “Jack” Middleton passed away on Tuesday, October 13th, 2015, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee with family by his side. Jack was born on September 24th, 1933 in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the middle of three boys to William and Mary Middleton. He was raised on the family farm just outside of Manvel, ND, where he attended a one-room school up to and through the 8th grade. There were some years he was the only student in his grade. He later attended high school in Manvel where he loved to brag he was in the top ten of his Manvel High School graduating class of 1951, which was a total of nine students. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and served during the Korean conflict, receiving the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal and an honorable discharge in 1956. His military service was a great source of pride for his entire life. Jack returned home after the service and began dating the love of his life, M. Jean Leiberg, who also grew up in Manvel. They were married on August 9th, 1956. Jack then attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Jack and Jean had two children during his college years before he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Education. He was interviewed and offered his first job over the phone, accepting an offer to teach 6th grade in Sunnyside, Washington, packing up the family and arriving there in the summer of 1960. Jack taught for 6 years, during which time Jack and Jean had their third child. He became Outlook Elementary School principal in his 7th year in the school district, was later appointed as principal at Chief Kamiakin Elementary, then moved on to what was at the time Sunnyside Junior High School. He continued his own education, receiving his Master’s Degree from Central Washington University and his superintendent credentials at WSU. He was appointed school district superintendent in 1980 and remained there until his retirement in 1990 after 30 years with the Sunnyside School District. Jack and Jean spent much of their retirement years chasing after grandkids and all of their activities including football, soccer, wrestling, basketball, band and many other school functions. They loved every minute of it. They also made many trips to visit relatives from North Dakota to Colorado. Jack was a devout, 55 year member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, where he performed many functions for a church family which held a special place in his heart for many years. He was a Rotarian, worked for the United Way and was a past Exalted Ruler for the Elk’s Club. He was also a member of the American Legion Hall in Manvel from the time of his honorable discharge to the end. He took great pride in his yard and spent many hours with his roses and vegetable garden. In his early years in Sunnyside he was a pure power hitter on the softball field. Some of the long balls he swatted haven’t landed yet. He managed the city pool for several years which meant we got to swim all day, all summer long. Well known for his sense of humor, Jack rarely walked around without at joke at the ready, many having to do with his early roots in the tiny town of Manvel which he would tell you the main street had to be widened so they could run a center line down it or how they would gather downtown on Saturdays to watch the only parking meter in town violate itself. As much as he liked to laugh about it, he was proud of his roots and visited home many times after relocating out west. Jack’s beloved wife of 55 years, Jean, passed away in 2012. He remained in Sunnyside until July of 2015, when he relocated to Wenatchee to be near family. He was blessed with a short period he was able to spend with his great granddaughter, Willow. He was also preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by daughter Joan Hamilton and granddaughter Heather Hamilton of Snohomish; son Jeff and wife Janet of Wenatchee; grandson Jordan (Kelsi) and great granddaughter Willow Danette Middleton of Wenatchee; grandson Gavin of Brownwood, Texas; step-grandson Christopher “CJ” Sanborn and his wife Megan of Bellingham and step-granddaughter Sarah Sanborn of Seattle; son Bill, his wife Alison, grandson Christopher and granddaughter Nicole of Yakima; brother Paul (Nancy) of Grand Forks; brother Dave (Marcene) of Manvel and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. The viewing and visitation for Jack will be at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside on Monday, October 19th, 2015 from 2 to 7 PM. Graveside services will be Tuesday, October 20th, 2015 at 10 AM at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens with a Memorial Service at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church at 11:30 AM. Reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, those wishing can make a donation in Jack’s name to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.
