Waterloo Daily Courier 17 Sep 1965 Her Retirement Plans Are Pretty Definite: She Just Isn't Going To EDGEWOOD - An Edgewood woman who assisted her pharmacist husband operate one of the town's oldest businesses and who has continued with its operation for 24 years following his death, has a definite idea regarding her retirement — she isn't going to. In her 77th year, Mrs. Leo Peick commented: "I will keep going as long as I can. Operating a business provides an eating card, as well as giving an opportunity to meet people, which I enjoy. I have had several chances to dispose of my business, but I won't sell until I have to." Combining her drug store and greeting card business with her hobbies of stamp collecting and exchanging souvenirs for 12 years with some 80 correspondence fans in Poland, Japan, New Zealand, Czechoslovakia and many other foreign countries, Mrs. Peick finds her daily tasks interesting. Since the death of her husband, Fred, a registered pharmacist, in May, 1941, Mrs. Peick has sold packaged drugs, medicine, paint, jewelry, gifts, watches and cosmetics, and does her own book work with her some $5,000 inventory. Her business is primarily cash. Her sales also include cameras and film, and she gives her customers two to three day service on processing and printing from films. She shares her stamp collecting and letter exchange hobbies with her daughter, Mrs. Paul Seward, also of Edgewood, and has learned from experience that in response to her many requests for souvenir exchange, the sure way is to get their souvenir first. "If you send them your gift first," she commented, "you may have to whistle for yours." Asked if anything ever exciting had happened during her long period of service, Mrs. Peick commented: "Yes, I had one weekend a few years back I will always remember. Coming to the store to work, I was injured in contact with an automobile; the next day my store was broken into, and following that a violent windstorm broke many of the windows in my store and home, as well". Despite her hobby of collecting whisky glasses numbering some 200 in pink, blue, red and green, plain colored, she still prefers the varied colored ones, and says if the glasses fail to have a crease in the bottom of them, they are not the old original ones. Commenting upon her unusual first name, Leo, Mrs. Peick says her mother disliked nicknames and was reasonably sure that there was no nickname for Leo. Mrs. Peick also has one son, Gayle, a teacher at Lakeland, Fla.
