Ulven, 78, of Whiting died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting following a brief illness. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Soldier Lutheran Church in Soldier, Iowa, with the Rev. Jim Little officiating. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City. Mrs. Ulven was born Jan. 10, 1923, in Round Lake, Minn., the daughter of Charlie and Ella (Weise) Manitz. She married Verne C. Ulven on Feb. 1, 1942, in Round Lake. She was a homemaker. She was then employed as a cook at a school, did baby sitting, served as a librarian, then was a bookkeeper with Jordan Soldier Valley Telephone Co. She was a member of Soldier Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a circle leader and held many other circle positions in the church. She was also a member of Soldier American Legion Auxiliary and Soldier Senior Center. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Lon and his special friend, Jolene Reynolds, of Soldier, John of Omaha and Kirk and his special friend, Danielle Pierce, of Beresford, S. D.; three daughters, Janet Foss of Soldier, Carol and her husband Roger Gray, and Joy and her husband Rick Ehlers, all of Audubon, Iowa; two brothers and their wives, Bill and Doris Manitz of Round Lake and Jack and Doris Manitz of Bakersfield, Calif.; a sister and her husband, Pearl and Jerry Christoffer of Windom, Minn.; five sisters-in-law, Eululia Manitz of Worthington, Minn., Mildred Britton of Jefferson, Iowa, Doris Stoffregan and Velma Ulven, both of Lake View, Iowa, and Alma Ulven of Mapleton, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Robin Johnson, David and Dan Foss, Jeff Gray, Trisha Thelander, Christopher, Ashley, Katie and Nick Ulven, Tracy Van Beek, Darcy, Jake and Kassi Ehlers; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers, Milo, Loren, Al, Walt, Harvey, Les, Leonard, Dave and a brother in infancy; and a sister, Marcella.
