Description	:	VERNE AND LEONA ULVEN My Dad, Verne Clifford Ulven, was born and lived in Soldier most of his life. He was born January 18, 1917, on the farm now owned by Pete (Wilmer) Knutson, to Olaf and Edith Ulven. He attended country school at the Ulven School and high school at Soldier High School. Read More	VERNE AND LEONA ULVEN My Dad, Verne Clifford Ulven, was born and lived in Soldier most of his life. He was born January 18, 1917, on the farm now owned by Pete (Wilmer) Knutson, to Olaf and Edith Ulven. He attended country school at the Ulven School and high school at Soldier High School. He was valedictorian of his class. After hi graduated he worked summers in the wheat fields of northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. It was at this time he met his wife, Leona, at a dance. Leona and Verne were married February 1, 1942 at Round Lake, Minnesota. Leona Anna Marie Manitz was born January 10, 1923 to Charles and Ella Manitz at Round Lake, Minnesota. She had 9 brothers and 2 sisters. She graduated from Round Lake High School. Verne was drafted into the army as WWII progressed. Leona stayed with her mother and worked at a grocery store and was the librarian. Janet and Carol were born while Verne was in the service. When Verne was discharged from the service they moved to a farm outside Okabena, Minnesota. Lon was born while living here. In 1948 they moved to Soldier and Verne worked as a hired man for Roy Severson. Jon was born that summer. In 1950 we moved to the Albert Stoll farm. We lived a year in Ute where Verne worked for the county bridge crew. He was then hired as custodian of the Soldier School. We moved back to Soldier and lived on Morningside Ave. in the Richard Olson house. Joy was born while we lived here. We then moved to the Ernie Seaton house and then to the Spalding house. Verne lost his job as custodian but was then hired as manager of Soldier Lumber Yard where he still works. Kirk was born in 1960. Leona was Librarian for some time in Soldier, did lots of babysitting, and is now employed by the Soldier-Jordon Valley Telephone Co. They have nine grandchildren and love to go dancing. One thing I can remember about Dad and marvel at was how he would sit down at night and read a book almost every night. He didn't stop until that book was finished. Two of the boys in the family aren't married yet. They are Jon Olaf who was born August 31, 1948 at Ute. He was a very good musician in school and also a very good singer. He graduated in 1966 from East Monona. He was drafted into the Viet Nam War and served two terms in Viet Nam and Thailand. Upon returning he got a job with Xerox and he is still working for them out of Omaha. He also has a new home in Omaha, Nebraska. Kirk is the other single brother. He was born August 20, 1960 at Denison, Iowa. He worked at Westendorf in Onawa until illness forced him to quit. He has been working for Soldier Construction Co. Burial will be in Soldier Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. _______________
