Leona Elizabeth Kling was born June 28, 1932, the daughter of Martin and Bertha (Herman) Kling, in Kenmare, ND. She was raised and educated in Donnybrook, ND, where she attended all 12 years of school and graduated from high school. Funk, 88, Minot, ND, formerly of Bowbells, ND, passed away Monday, February 8, 2021, at Edgewood Vista in Minot. Leona Elizabeth Kling was born June 28, 1932, the daughter of Martin and Bertha (Herman) Kling, in Kenmare, ND. She was raised and educated in Donnybrook, ND, where she attended all 12 years of school and graduated from high school. Following her high school graduation, Leona worked at Woolworth’s and then at the A.S.C. Office in Minot. Leona married Arnold J. Funk June 6, 1953, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kenmare. They made their home on a farm located three miles west of Bowbells in Ward Township of Burke County, where they farmed and raised livestock. Together, they raised their four sons and six daughters on the farm. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where she had served as president of the Altar Society, and also was a president of Bowbells Senior Citizens. Arnold passed away February 6, 2010. Following her husband’s death, she continued to reside in Bowbells until the fall of 2011, when she moved to Edgewood Vista in Minot. She enjoyed all the friendships she developed while living there and also enjoyed all the daily activities she kept busy with. Her greatest pride and joy were raising her 10 children. When she wasn’t busy with the children and homemaking, she enjoyed church choir and cantata, bowling, reading, gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, tending to her yardwork and flowers and in the later years coloring and doing puzzles. Her loving family includes: children, Annette Funk, Bismarck, ND, Joyce (Ray) Wald, Baldwin, ND, Ramona (George) Hamlin, Anacortes, WA; Jerome Funk, Williston, ND, Linda Davis, Lincoln, ND, Janice Ralston, Petersburg, ND, James (Stacey) Funk, Bowbells, ND, Sandra (Kim) Essler, Garrison, ND, John (Heidi) Funk, Fargo, ND, and David (Sheila) Funk, Minot, ND; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Bertha Kling; husband of 56 years, Arnold; granddaughters, Samantha Wald and Robyn Essler; brothers, Gustav, Harry, Arthur, George, Walter, Clifford and Frederick Kling; and sister, Esther Bowman. Mass of Christian Burial: Friday, February 12, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot. It is required for those attending to wear masks and social distance. Interment: will be held in June of 2021, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Bowbells, ND. Visitation: Thursday, February 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Bowbells Fire Dept., the Bowbells Ambulance, or the Bowbells City Park.
