Arnold John Funk was born July 14, 1925, a son of Mathias and Anna (Hondl) Funk, in Kenmare, ND. He was raised in the Bowbells area and attended grades one through eight in a Carter Township one-room school. He then attended Bowbells High School, graduating in 1942. Read More	Arnold J. Funk • 1925 - 2010 Arnold J. Funk, 84, Bowbells, ND, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2010, in a Kenmare Hospital. Arnold John Funk was born July 14, 1925, a son of Mathias and Anna (Hondl) Funk, in Kenmare, ND. He was raised in the Bowbells area and attended grades one through eight in a Carter Township one-room school. He then attended Bowbells High School, graduating in 1942. Arnold enlisted in the United States Army June 6, 1951. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged March 5, 1953. Arnold married Leona Kling June 6, 1953, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Kenmare. They made their home on a farm located in Ward Township of Burke County, rural Bowbells, where they farmed small grains and raised livestock. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, its church council and had served on the Parish Center Building Committee. He has also served on the FHA Board, Burke County draft board, Bowbells School Board, was the director and president of the Burke County Agricultural Improvement Association, was the Bowbells Township supervisor and chairman and has been chairman of the Burke County Reorganizational Committee. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus, and served as director of the ND Angus Association, director and president of the Upper Missouri Cattle Breeders Association, director of the Farmers Elevator of Coteau, director and chairman of the Dakota Maine-Anjou Association, and chairman of the ND Sunflower Task Force. Arnold was a lifetime farmer, who enjoyed taking early morning drives to survey the crops, and was especially interested in new farming methods. He also enjoyed playing cards and had a love for all animals. His loving family includes: wife of 56 years, Leona, Bowbells; sons, Jerome Funk, Williston, James (Stacey) Funk, Bowbells, John (Heidi) Funk, Fargo, and David (Sheila) Funk, Minot; daughters, Annette Funk, Minot, Joyce (Ray) Wald, Baldwin, ND, Ramona (George) Hamlin, Laguna Niguel, CA, Linda (Rob) Davis, Lincoln, ND, Janice Ralston, Petersburg, ND, and Sandra (Kim) Essler, Garrison; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Leo Funk, Bowbells; sister, Eleanor Olson, Garrison; and four nieces, one nephew; and extended family members. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, Mathias and Anna Funk; granddaughter, Samantha Wald; sister, Florence Funk, and brother-in-law, Vern Olson. Funeral: Saturday, February 13, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bowbells. Interment: St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Bowbells, ND. Visitation: Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bowbells. Vigil Prayer Service: Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Bowbells. Memorials: are preferred to Bowbells Ambulance and the Bowbells Fire Department.
