Description	:	Leona Henrietta Porter, the daughter of John and Linda (Schwarz) Fortman, was born on October 12, 1905 at Wheaton, Minnesota. She passed away on December 25, 2004 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 99 years, 2 months and 13 days. Leona came to Nebraska in March of 1920 with her parents from Swift Current, Canada. She joined the Presbyterian Church in Nelson at the age of 16 on her birthday. Read More	Leona Henrietta Porter, the daughter of John and Linda (Schwarz) Fortman, was born on October 12, 1905 at Wheaton, Minnesota. She passed away on December 25, 2004 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska at the age of 99 years, 2 months and 13 days. Leona came to Nebraska in March of 1920 with her parents from Swift Current, Canada. She joined the Presbyterian Church in Nelson at the age of 16 on her birthday. She attended school at the rural Pleasant Ridge Country School west of Nelson, Nebraska. She was united in marriage to O.P. Porter on January 26, 1927 in her parent's home by Rev. S.H. Jones. To this union were born three children. They moved into Nelson from the farm in 1961 when they purchased the Portwood Clothing Co. and changed the name to the Porter Department Store. They sold the store in 1987 upon retiring after 31 years in business. Leona was a member of the Eastern Star, receiving her 50 year pin in 2003, the Rebekah Lodge, the Busy Bee Club, UCC Ladies Fellowship and afternoon Circle, the last member of the CDQ Class (Christians Don't Quit), 4-H leader and a current member of the Nelson United Church of Christ all of Nelson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband O.P., brothers, Walter, Martin and Oscar Fortman and one sister, Esther Thielman. She is survived by her children: Wayne and wife Joyce of Webb City, Missouri, Darlene Shaw of Edgar, Nebraska and Phyllis O'Dey and husband Don of Hastings, Nebraska. Ten grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. One brother, Leonard Fortman and wife Madeline of Lodi, California and one sister, Clarice Younker of Lodi, California along with a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at 2:00 PM from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska with Rev. Judith E. Allen officiating. Music was provided by Stephanie Thayer as soloist and Vergene Gunn as Organist. Pallbearers were Jon Porter, Tammy Graves, Timothy O'Dey, Teresa Bruggeman, Dan Shaw, Steve Shaw, Marcia Junker, and Cheryl Brockman. Rites by the Nelson Chapter of the O.E.S. were given. Interment was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson, Nebraska. Memorials may go the the Nelson Community United Church of Christ. The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, December 30, 2004; pg. 12
