Wayne Porter of Webb City, Mo.: two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Darlene) Shaw of Edgar and Mrs. Don (Phyllis) O'Dey of Hastings, three sisters: Mrs. Ed (Marie) Troudt, Mrs. Guy (Nina Mae) Bruce, and Mrs. Ralph (Velma) McKevitt all of Nelson, 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Porter, son of Wilford Riley Porter and Aley Mae Richardson Porter, was born on a farm near Lewiston, Nebraska, November 17, 1898, and passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Nelson, Nebraska, on December 30, 1986, at the age of 88 years. He attended grade school at Pleasant Ridge rural school near Nelson, Nebraska, and attended on week of high school in Nelson. He was united in marriage to Leona Fortman on January 26, 1927, at the farm home of her parents near Nelson. This union was blessed with three children: one son, Reverend Wayne Porter, and two daughters, Darlene Shaw and Phyllis O'Dey. O.P. and his wife, Leona, farmed near Nelson for several years. Later they moved into Nelson where they owned and have operated the Porter Department Store for the past 27 years. The store and serving his customers was O.P.'s life. His services to the community were many; he has been a member of the First United Presbyterian Church for 61 years and served as elder; served on the school board; was active in the development of Elk Creek Manor; was active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Nelson for many years. He was a willing worked and gave freely of his time and financial help for the betterment of his community. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Raymond Porter and one infant sister, Freda Ann Porter. Survivors include his wife, Leona of Nelson, Nebraska; one son, Reverend Wayne Porter and his wife, Joyce, of Webb City, Missouri; two daughters, Mrs. Darlene Shaw and her husband, Raymond, of Edgar, Nebraska, and Mrs. Phyllis O'Dey and her husband, Don, of Hastings, Nebraska; three sisters, Marie Troudt, Nine Mae Bruce and her husband Guy, and Velma McKevitt, all of Nelson; one sister-in-law, Floy Porter of Nelson; ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 3, 1987, at 10:30 a.m. from the First United Presbyterian Church in Nelson, Nebraska, with Rev. Richard Markland officiating. The church choir provided the music with selection of "For All The Saints" and "The Family of God," with Dot Ferebee as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were: Dan Shaw, Steve Shaw, Jon Porter, Tin O'Dey, Ron Porter and Roger Knehans. Honorary pallbearers were: Frank Harris, Robert Littrell, Glenn Oltmans, Earl Petz, Clyde Reeve, C.E. Wehrman, H.B. Wehrman and Joseph Ferebee. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson, Nebraska, was in charge of the arrangements.
