Leona Margaret Haux was born Jan. 19, 1930, to Henry and Emma (Pleinis) Haux at home northwest of Java, S.D. She attended grade school and graduated from Selby High School. She married Philip Huft on June 26, 1949. They farmed northwest of Bowdle, S.D., before moving to farm northwest of Roscoe, S.D. They farmed together and she worked for a short time at Scherf's Store and a cafe in Roscoe. In 1969, they moved into Roscoe. In 1970, she started working at the Hosmer Senior Citizen's Home. She then went to work at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Ipswich as one of the original staff members. She worked as a C.N.A. for the home until an injury in 1983 forced her retirement. Leona was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Roscoe and was active in the Ladies Aide. She enjoyed card parties and bowling, as well as keeping busy with crocheting, sewing and baking. She found great joy in her family and especially liked to spend time with her grandchildren. Leona died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at the Bowdle Nursing Home. Thankful for having her in their lives are her husband, Philip of Roscoe; three sons, Wayne (Pam) Huft of Amarillo, Texas, Dale (Janet) Huft of Clovis, N.M., and Richard (Robyn) Huft of San Dimas, Calif.; three daughters, Cleta (Rick) Vargason of Roscoe, Cheryl (Joel) Beck of Sioux Falls, and Charlotte (Steve) Meyer of Hawley, Minn.; two brothers, Ervin Haux of Selby and Elmer (Bev) Haux of Shaunavan, Saskatchewan, Canada; one sister, Estella (Phil) Bast of Flushing, N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Harold Voller of Bath; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Nathaniel, and two sisters, Esther and Virginia. Casket bearers will be Doug Schmidtgall, Dean Schmidtgall, LeRoy Sandmeier, David Huft, Lonnie Haux, George Haux. Funeral arrangements by Gramm Funeral Home of Ipswich.
