Death has exacted heavy toll of our village and vicinity of late, but no more crushing blow has fallen than the one sustained by the parents and little son, together will other relatives of the beautiful life just gone out. Leona was born near Ulysses and upOn the attainment of school age, first attended school in district No. 27, whose teacher at that time and the present is Miss Katie A. Kelly, who was extremely fond of her apt and obedient little pupil. Later the little girl entered the public school at Ulysses, where she endeared herself to both teacher and classmates by her unaffected simplicity and loving personality. Following graduation from the eighth grade she became a pupil at the Sisters parochial school at David City, where she made rapid progress in her studies, as she posses[ed] an unusually brilliant intellect. In fact, her mental capacity was beyond that of the average child of her age. Deceased was the love of her teachers and classmates here the same as she had been at the former schools and visited home folks regularly, blissfully unconscious of the fact that soon she would be stricken with a fatal illness. Less than two weeks ago severe pain became manifest in her left hip bone when she came home. The symptoms became alarming and a few days later the little sufferer was taken to St. Elizabeth's hospital where the best medical and surgical skill of the state combined to overpower the disease. As a last resort a surgical operation was performed on the left hip bone for ostis-mylitis, with but little improvement. THe case appeared to be one in which the cause of the illness was obscure, but it originated prematurely from a toxic condition of the system to a germ from a diseased tonsils. Death came to the child's relief after eight days of intense suffering. The parents and little son, with many relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of a host of friends, many of whom upon receipt of the news of her death responded with beautiful messages of condolence and by words and deeds did everything possible to soften the blow sustained by the surviving relatives. The remains were brought to her home near Ulysses Thursday afternoon and the funeral services were held at the church of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, the Rev. Father Loughran officiating at requium high mass. The large circle of sympathetic friends present and the profusion of beautiful flowers, an immense heart, the gift of the members of the league of the Sacred Heart, a wreathe from the pupils of Miss Katie Kelly's school, along with other blooms, attested the love and esteem entertained for the pious and gentle little girl whose memory will long dwell in the hearts of her friends and admirers. Twelve young girls robed in white acted in the capacity of pallbearers. The active pallbearers were the Misses Loretta Considine, Marcella Walsh, Elnora Otoupal, Jeanette Gleason, Rebecca Van Ness and Leona Parke, all of whom wept biterly ast hey transferred their precious charge to the auto hearse in waiting to receive it. The same little girls carried a profusion of flowers in the left hand to the Catholic cemetery, where interment was made. A lengthy procession of autos and carriages drove to the cemetery to witness the last sad rites. "Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and may Light Perpetual shine upon her." An angel voice whispered to Leona To come to the home of the Blest, And join bright spirits immortal In the land of sweetness and rest. Near the great white throne surrounded By serephim bright and fair, The lov'd one lost is waiting To welcome her dear ones there. And as sunshine follows the shadow, May the light of an endless day Encircle and comfort the lov'd ones Till death's angels shall call them away. As time bears us onward so swiftly, Tho' we bow to the heavenly will, Yet we'll long for the touch of a vanished hand And the sound of a voice that is still. EDITH B.
