Description	:	Aged Resident Passes Away. Leonard Stillson, one of the pioneers of the County, died Sunday at home of his daughter, Mrs. David Fouts, about ten miles southwest of town. Mr. Stillson was 83 years old, a Veteran of the Mexican War. He was one of the old settlers and formerly lived in the coal region south of Scammon which bore his name at that time. Listed on the 1880 Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri Census. Listed on the 1885 Empire City, Cherokee County, Kansas Census. Listed on the 1900 Lyon twp., Cherokee County, Kansas Census. *Leonard volunteered on August 5, 1847 at Shawnee, La Salle County, Illinois to serve in the Mexican War. On December 29, 1847 rolls at Shawnee, Illinois show him in the Ist Illinois Regiment. On April 14, 1848 he was mustered in with a detail of recruits at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. In June and August 1848 he was on duty at Las Vegas, New Mexico. In history, there was a three part campaign against Mexico, the 3rd being to hold New Mexico and California as retribution against Mexico for the military advancement against Texas, which had joined the United States as a state in 1845. On September 20, 1848, while his company was returning East, and while fording Big Cow Creek in central Kansas, Leonard's horse fell on his right leg, causing a compound fracture.
