Desch, 86, Topeka, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at a Topeka hospice house. Mr. Desch was a meat cutter and had worked for Eakes Steinbock Grocery for several years. He was born June 21, 1915, the son of Adam Jacob and Barbara Kaberline Desch. Mr. Desch was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 and the James W. Gibbons Assembly of the 4th Degree. He married Rita M. Younger on May 29, 1943, in Topeka. She died Dec. 3, 2001. Survivors include two sons, Stephen L. Desch, Meriden, and Brian T. Desch, Topeka; two daughters, Janice K. Hexdall, Sarasota, Fla., and Patty M. Miller, Linwood; two sisters, Marcella Winderlin, Topeka, and Leona Maxfield, Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Burial with military graveside services conducted by Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Desch will lie in state after 4 p.m. Sunday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where a parish prayer service at 6 p.m. will be followed by a Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 rosary and James W. Gibbons Assembly of the 4th Degree Chalice Ceremony at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Fund at Topeka Presbyterian Manor, 4712 S.W. 6th St., Topeka, 66606.
