Survivors include wife Lorena Sernett of Laurens; sisters, Dorothy (Joe) Kliegl of Emmetsburg and Charolene Sernett of Pocahontas. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents. Leonard Joseph Sernett was born on October 3, 1919, near Pocahontas. He was the son of Joseph and Agnes (Bartosh) Sernett. He was educated in Pocahontas schools, graduating in 1936. Leonard served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. On August 2, 1945, he married Lorena Hoerchler at Pocahontas. Leonard farmed for 13 years near Laurens. In 1960, the couple moved to Laurens and owned a Standard Oil tank wagon and service station for 15 years. He was a salesman at S&H Motors for three years. He served as a county supervisor for seven years. Leonard retired in 1987. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a lector, Eucharist minister and served on the cemetery board. He was a 50 year member of the 3rd degree Knights of Columbus, served as a grand knight and was a member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus, Bishop Heelan Assembly and was a faithful navigator. He was the chairman of the Lions Club, chairman of the Laurens bi-centennial committee and served on the Laurens centennial committee. He was the founder of the American Heritage Musicians and Singers. Leonard was a member of the Laurens VFW and American Legion. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and in 1974 was “Man of the Year”. He was also on the Northwest Iowa Mental Health board. Leonard was an avid fisherman, he enjoyed traveling and tending his flower garden. For over twenty years, “Santa” made many visits on Christmas eve. Contributed by Teresa
