Lorena Anna Hoerchler was born on November 28, 1920, in Carroll County. She was the daughter of August “Gus” and Mary (Niehaus) Hoerchler. Lorena graduated from the Laurens High School in 1938. Lorena Anna Hoerchler was born on November 28, 1920, in Carroll County. She was the daughter of August “Gus” and Mary (Niehaus) Hoerchler. Lorena graduated from the Laurens High School in 1938. She then attended Tobin Business College in Fort Dodge. On August 2, 1945, Lorena married Leonard Sernett at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pocahontas. Lorena was employed for REA in Pocahontas and then moved near Laurens, where she and Leonard farmed for 13 years before moving into Laurens in 1960. Lorena was a secretary at M & JR Hakes/Schrivner for 22 years, retiring in 1986. Lorena was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Laurens for most of her entire life. She served as a lector and Eucharistic minister and was the first woman parish director serving from 1983 – 2004. She was assistance to the parish priests from 1947-2009. She received the Diocesan Youth Leadership Award in 1960. She was President of the Central Deanery, DCCW and Rosary Society. FAITHE was the center of her life. She was a charter member of the Laurens Historical Society and served on committees for the County and Laurens Centennials. She was a member of Stitches and the Busy “B” Birthday club and card clubs. Lorena loved to fish, travel, play cards, and nurture her flower gardens. She loved roses! She and Leonard were the founders of the American Heritage Musicians and Singers who performed many masses and events. The Singers spread friendship and good cheer for 10 years. Lorena is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard, brother, Cletus and sister-in-law, Donna Hoerchler and brother, Laverne and sister–in-law, Shirley Hoerchler. She is survived by many special nieces and nephews.
