He was born Nov. 16, 1918 on a farm near Morse Bluff, NE to Edward R. and Vlasta (Roubal) Vopalensky. Leonard graduated from North Bend High School in 1937. He was born Nov. 16, 1918 on a farm near Morse Bluff, NE to Edward R. and Vlasta (Roubal) Vopalensky. Leonard graduated from North Bend High School in 1937. Following graduation, he moved to Elkhorn, NE where he worked as a truck driver. In 1942, he joined the US Army and served with the 14th Armored Division, 94th Cavalry in the European Theatre. He received the Bronze Star at the Battle of the Bulge. While under ferocious attack, Leonard was left alone to man a machine gun, which enabled his company to retreat to safety. When he ran out of ammunition, he was able to escape and join another outfit. The army newspaper named Stars and Stripes carried an account of the Division's heroics. He was discharged on November 4, 1945 and then returned to Elkhorn. In March of 1946 he was united in marriage to Faye Quinn. They were parents of 1 daughter, Patricia. In October of 1966 he moved to Hooper, NE and later was united in marriage to Avis Tillman Rold; with that union were two step-sons, Gary and Danley Rold. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his granddaughter, Anna Rold, who was born in 2002. Leonard belonged to American Legion Post #18 of Hooper and VFW Post #854 of Fremont and the ZCBJ Lodge, which he treasured because of his Czech ancestry. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Avis in 2001 and sister, Edna Cerny. Survivors include, daughter, Patricia Vopalensky; step sons, Danley (Charyl) Rold and Gary (Marsha) Rold; 1 granddaughter, Anna Rold; 1 sister-in-law; 1 brother in-law; and niece Madalyn Smith. Memorial service will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, May 11th, 2015 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. Mike Harris of Emmanuel Fellowship Church in Omaha will officiate. There is no visitation. Burial will be 3:00 P.M on Monday at the Hooper Cemetery in Hooper, NE with military honors conducted by Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20.
