Leonard Philip Deplazes was born Oct. 8, 1914 to Nicholas Joseph Deplazes of Switzerland and Margaret Scharf Deplazes of Bavaria, Germany on their farm north of York. He was the 12th of 16 children. He attended country school for six years and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Devils Lake as valedictorian in 1932. On July 15, 1942 he married Dorothy Tobin at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Leeds. On their farm they raised Brown Swiss cattle and small grains. He enjoyed politics and was precinct committeeman for several years. He was a delegate to several state Republican conventions. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Devils Lake for 57 years. He enjoyed duck, goose and deer hunting and was an avid reader. Survivors include his wife of 63 years; two sons, Leonard Jr. (Shirley) of York and Anthony "George" (Angela) of Rugby; four daughters, Joan (George) Youngerman of Cando, Linda (Donald) Burgeson of Douglas, Candice (Kevin) Benz of Dunn Center and Theresa (Bruce) Dahl of Fargo; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul ( Cleo) Deplazes of Devils Lake; a sister, Margaret Ely of Greybull, Wyo,; and two sisters-in-law, Hester Deplazes of Mandan and Violet Deplazes of Devils Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Plazi, Joseph, John, Francis, Bernard and Paul Jacob; and seven sisters, Mary, Ursula, Dorothy, Sr. Judith OSB, Lucy, Sr. Alban RSM and Agnes; and a great-granddaughter, Catherine Dahl Flaherty.
