Grace ______ Dubuque Telegraph Herald Monday 19 Aug 1940 Man Killed, Wife Injured in Odd Crash Manchester Salesman Victim of Mishap Near Centralia Leonard Fisher, 54, of Manchester. was almost instantly killed about 2 o’clock Monday morning when he apparently lost control of his automobile on a curve about a quarter of a mile west of Centralia on Highway 20, crashed into a culvert, and was crushed when the hurtling machine fell on him after he had been thrown from the car. His wife, riding with him at the time, escaped with bruises and contusions about the chest and back and minor lacerations of the face. She suffered also from shock. Her condition is not considered serious. It was at first believed she had suffered a broken back, but an examination at Finley Hospital, where she was taken following the accident, revealed no bone fractures. Deputies out of the office of Sheriff Leo J. Eisbach, called to the scene shortly after the crash occurred, said that an examination of the highway indicated that Fisher’s car left the highway on a wide curve and went into a ditch. The machine continued for a distance of 186 feet, however, before it turned over on its left side, and then skidded on its side another 80 feet before it struck a culvert in a side road known as the Vernon Lane Road. Here the impact threw both Mr. and Mrs. Fisher from the machine and on to the side road. Indications are the car was still traveling at considerable speed when it struck the culvert because the car hurtled in to the air, overturning on its top and landing squarely on Fisher, who was lying in the road. Mrs. Fisher was thrown clear of the car and to one side, and narrowly escaped the fate of her husband. The accident occurred in front of the Philip Ginter farm, and Mr. Ginter notified the sheriff’s office. As soon as the deputies arrived and discovered that Fisher was dead, Sheriff Eisbach was notified and rushed to the scene, taking with him Dr. D. F. Ward, acting county coroner. In the meantime, Mr. Ginter, and several others, aided the sheriff’s deputies in removing the car from Fischer’s body. His head and chest were badly crushed. The city ambulance had been called earlier, and in it Mrs. Fisher was rushed to Finley Hospital. A wrecker was also summoned, and the wrecked automobile was later towed to Dubuque. The body of the accident victim was removed from the scene to the Behr Funeral Home here, from where it was to be transferred Monday evening to the family home in Manchester. Funeral arrangements had not been completed late Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Fisher were on their way to Manchester from Dubuque after visiting a daughter here. Mr. Fisher was born on Feb. 2, 1882, and for the last 17 years had been employed as a salesman for the Dr. Fenton Vigor-Tone Company, sellers of livestock feed. Surviving, besides his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Norma) Johnson, Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Edwin (Wilma) Correll, Dubuque; three sons, Claude, Dundee, la., Clyde, Sacramento, Calif., and Bernard, at home; four sisters, Mrs. Mabel Hindal, of Wisconsin, Mrs. Grace Teeden and Mrs. Ruth Kopp, both of Elkader, and Mrs. Nell Lange, West Union; and three brothers, Fred and Lyle Fisher, Edgewood, and Frank of Sacramento, Calif.
