Singer Lived in Union Many Years Following an illness of a week, Leonard A. Singer, a substantial and well known farmer of Plymouth county died at his home, 400 Second Avenue NW., in this city, Saturday morning, aged nearly 71 years. Mr. Singer suffered a stroke presumably due to heat, Saturday, July 26, and never rallied from the attack. Mr. Singer was a successful farmer in Union township where he lived for many years before coming to Le Mars to make his home ten years ago. Leonard A. Singer was a native of Germany. He had lived in America since he was eleven years of age. He was born in the kingdom of Bavaria, October 15, 1859. His father died when he was a child and in 1870 he came to America with his mother and brothers and sisters. They settled near Scales Mound, Illinois, and Leonard worked on farms and attended school in the winter. He later learned the trade of wagonmaker and was employed with the Bain Wagon company at Kenosha, Wish. He subsequently took employment with an organ manufacturing company. While living in Kenosha Mr. Singer was married to Katherine Mader in 1883, and in the following years they came to Plymouth county where Mr. Snger worked on a farm and then rented land in union township and farmed on his own account. He bought a fine farm there a few years later and expended much time and money imporving the place and was a successful farmer and stock breeder. Active in Community While a resident of Union township he was active in the affairs of the community and served as school director and in other township ofices. Ten children were born to their union, eight of whom with the widow are living. They are Urban Singer, Le Mars; John Singer, Des Moies; Mrs. Will Sculdt, Kingsley; Mrs. Ben Byers, Moville; Miss Millie Singer, Clarence, Albert and Francis, of Le Mars There are twenty-one grandchildren. One son, Edward Singer, died eleven years ago while in army service at Camp Dodge and a daughter, Mrs. August Byers, died six years ago. He is also survived by two brothers, Nicholas Singer, of Merrill, Louis Singer, of Remsen, and a sister, Mrs. Barbara Kemp, of Remsen. The funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Joseph's church, Mgr. W. A. Pape officiating. Mr. Singer had a wide acquaintance in the county and was highly esteemed in the community where he had lived for nearly half a century.
