Description	:	Leonhart Harry Kahler was the 5th child from a family of 15 children born to Katherina Paulina Schamber and Paul Ferdinand Kahler. Leonhart was born in Lake Township, Tripp County, South Dakota, on land surrounding Rahn Dam, on April 9, 1921. His birth took place in his grandfather Ferdinand Kahler's, farmhouse, with his grandmother Louisa Hildenbrandt Kahler assisting in his birth. Read More	Leonhart Harry Kahler was the 5th child from a family of 15 children born to Katherina Paulina Schamber and Paul Ferdinand Kahler. Leonhart was born in Lake Township, Tripp County, South Dakota, on land surrounding Rahn Dam, on April 9, 1921. His birth took place in his grandfather Ferdinand Kahler's, farmhouse, with his grandmother Louisa Hildenbrandt Kahler assisting in his birth. He spent the majority of his childhood growing up on his parents' farm, south of Colome in Lake Township. He attended District 77 school through the 8th grade. This is where he learned to speak English, as the family spoke only German at home. He walked to school with his siblings, which was about a mile, except when the weather was bad, his father would hitch up a team of horses to the wagon for transportation. The family attended the Wisconsin Synod Lutheran Church, located by Rahn Dam with Pastor Friz Miller. The morning services were in German and the afternoon services were in English. He was baptized in 1921 and confirmed on November 11, 1934 into the Lutheran faith. At the young age of 14, he decided to venture out on his own, hitchhiking to Wyoming and then taking a bus to California. He worked in California about a year, until the child labor law came into effect. He hitch-hiked back to Wyoming working for his uncle until the fall of 1937. He then moved back to South Dakota, where he farmed South of Colome with his father. On August 27, 1939 at St. Paul's Lutheran Mission Festival, held at Turtle Butte Hall, Leonhart met Dorothy Elizabeth Story Beauchamp and fell in love. Leonhart and Dorothy were united in marriage January 14, 1942 at the Colome Lutheran Parsonage. Leonhart and Dorothy purchased land South of Colome and spent their entire married life farming and raising their family of 14 children. Leonhart was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Colome, which he attended faithfully. Leonhart served on the township board, school board and Church boards. He is survived by his thirteen children: Delorus (Monte) Krizan of Dallas, SD; Marlene (Arlo) Meyer of Humboldt, SD; Robert (Karen) of Castle Rock, Colorado; Glenda (Dennis) Olson of Plains, Montana; Loretta (Steve) Johnson of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; Ronald (Robin) of Ashland, Nebraska; Katherine (Ronald) DeMers of Colome, SD; Judy (Bob) Hotz of Sioux Falls; Bonnie (Monte) Vavra of Mableton, Georgia; Ruth (Kevin) Osborne of O'Neill, Nebraska; Karen (Dale) Emme of Millboro, SD; Barbara Whitfield and friend John Porras of Alliance, Nebraska; Glen (Julie) of Colome, SD; son-in law Darrel Pochop of Colome,SD; 39 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; six sisters, Rose Kitzebue of Kansas City, Kansas, Lydia Story of Colome, SD, Adeline Bender of Winner, SD, Martha Bender of Marshfield, Wisconsin, Mable Lehman of Appleton, Wisconsin and Erna (Darol) Kinzer of San Diego, California; sister-in-laws Marie Kahler and Viola Story of Winner, SD, Melba Schilling of Carter, SD, Vera Maier of Norfolk, Nebraska, Joyce Songer and Leota Story of Bassett, Nebraska; brother-in law Bud Story of Worthing, SD and Bill Ingram of Wills Point, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends who have touched his life; Melvin and Liz Cahoy of Dallas, SD, Margaret Pochop of Oldham, SD, Kathy Ingle of Colorado and all the residents and workers of the Winner Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; a daughter, JoAnn Pochop; son-in-law's Jim Osborne and Mike Hopkins; grandchildren Laura Kahler, Justin DeMers and Derek Vavra; great-granddaughter Adeline Hotz; five brothers, Harry, Fred, Rudy, John and Paul; three sisters, Lucille, Dorothy and Flora. He was a devoted father and husband, dedicating his life to taking care of his wife, Dorothy, his children and grandchildren. He loved to travel, go fishing, play cards, play baseball, go hunting, handing out candy and suckers to all who came to visit, help his neighbors and especially visit with neighbors, friends and family. Leonhart spent his life farming, building projects, helping other people and making memories with his kind words of wisdom and his many stories and jokes. He was quite knowledgably of the Bible, and it was a common sight to see him reading his Bible in the evenings. Many residents in the Winner Nursing Home have shared with the family what a spiritual inspiration he was to them. Leonhart's greatest joy was his family and having family gatherings, where there was always plenty to eat and lots of fun and activities. He will be truly missed by all his family and friends.
