Description	:	LeRoy E. Bergmann, 76, of rural Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday morning, July 17, 2010 at the Waverly Health Center, Waverly from complications of cancer. LeRoy was born on April 9, 1934, in Douglas Township, rural Waverly, Iowa, the son of Erwin and Martha (Rodemeyer) Bergmann. Leroy was baptized on April 22, 1934 and confirmed on March 30, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church – Western Douglas. Read More	LeRoy E. Bergmann, 76, of rural Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday morning, July 17, 2010 at the Waverly Health Center, Waverly from complications of cancer. LeRoy was born on April 9, 1934, in Douglas Township, rural Waverly, Iowa, the son of Erwin and Martha (Rodemeyer) Bergmann. Leroy was baptized on April 22, 1934 and confirmed on March 30, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church – Western Douglas. He attended country school in Douglas Township #4 through the 8th grade, graduating in 1952 from the Waverly High School. LeRoy then worked at various jobs before being called to serve his country with the U.S. Navy on the USS Chickasaw. On September 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to Mildred V. Busse at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly. The couple made their home in San Diego, where LeRoy was stationed with the military where he participated in atomic weapons test in Bikini Islands in 1956. In 1957, the couple returned to Waverly, where LeRoy worked for Loren Wedeking Electric. LeRoy and Mildred farmed for one year east of Bremer and in 1961, they moved to a family farm two miles west and one and a half miles north of Bremer. They had a dairy herd and hogs on this farm. In 1970, they purchased a farm six and a half miles east of Plainfield, this farm was previously owned by LeRoy's parents, grandparents (Louis and Emma Rodemeyer) and his great grandparents (August and Louise Hoppenworth). This farm has been in his family since 1891. LeRoy was semi-retired, but was still able to plant crops in 2009. LeRoy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church – Western Douglas, rural Plainfield, where he was held many offices in the church. He was a board member for the B & B Oil Company, Plainfield Co-op, Greater Plainfield Club and a member of Amvets Post #79 of Waverly. LeRoy enjoyed farming, playing cards, auctions, camping, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. LeRoy is survived by his loving wife of over 55 years, Mildred Bergmann of rural Waverly; his son, Randy & Dawn (Spratt) Bergmann of Waverly; his daughter, Wanda (Bergmann) Cordes of Waverly; five grandchildren, Caleb & Abigail Bergmann, Leah & Willie Morris, Levi Bergmann, Sarah and David Cordes; two great grandchildren, Beau Morris and Oliver Bergmann; one sister, Geneva & Irving Ellermann of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Harley & Betty Bergman of Hudson and David & Dolly Bergmann of Atlantic, Iowa. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Margaret Warnke and Dorothy Meyer and four brothers, Roger, Robert and Edgar & Allan. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church – Western Douglas, rural Plainfield, Iowa, with Rev. Kim Thacker officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by the Waverly AMVETS Post #79 will be in the St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery – Western Douglas. Public visitation will be held on 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in Waverly and also for an hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church – Western Douglas or to the family.
