The victim, Franklin County's 14th traffic fatality of the year, was identified as LEROY ELDON MARTIN, of R. R. 2, Smithsburg, Md. Coronor John P. Manges reported the youth died almost instantly of a head injury. There will be no inquest, Dr. Magges added. Entering Franklin County on Route 16 (Sunshine Trail) at 1:40 in the morning, the youth apparently failed to see the Western Maryland Railway Co. freight crossing the highway at the grade crossing. The boy's 1962 model Ford crashed into a freight car in the middle section of the train. The auto was pulled a short distance along the tracks, then thrown clear of the right-of-way. The train crew, unaware of the mishap, made no effort to halt the train, bound from Hagerstown to York. Police said a motorist, headed east on Route 16 and halted at the grade crossing, saw the Martin car crash into the moving train. Unable to go to Martin's assistance because of the moving train, the motorist turned his vehicle around and returned to a roadside telephone where he summoned help. The Martin car, valued at $2,500, was demolished. Members of the family said the youth, who would have observed his 18th birthday on Wednesday, was returning from a visit with his fiance, Miss Lois Noll in Spring Grove. Born on Aug., 28, 1945, in Washington County, Md., the youth was a son of Melvin C. and Bertha Eshelman Martin, with whom he resided. He was a member of Stouffer's Mennonite Church at Smithsburg, and was last employed at the Raymond Benedict farm, also on R. R. 2, Smithsburg. Surviving are his parents, and the following brothers and sisters, Chester E. Martin, Maugansville; Jason E. Martin, R. R. 2, Smithsburg; Miss Mary Ellen Martin, Miss Darlene E. Martin, Charles E. Martin, Miss Esther E. Martin, all of R. R. 2, Smithsburg; his paternal step-grandmother, Mrs. Anna Mary Martin, R. R., Smithsburg, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Amanda L. Eshelman, R. R. 2, Smithsburg. The funeral will be held Thursday morning, the cortege meeting at the Martin residence at 9:30 a.m. Further services will be held at 10 a.m. at the Stouffer's Mennonite Church. Burial will be made in the Stouffer's Church Cemetery. Friends may call at the Martin residence any time Wednesday. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Arrangements are in charge of the Minnich funeral home, Greencastle.
