Read More	Leroy Blanchard Rites Held Wednesday Leroy Blanchard, 82 died Friday, June 8 while visiting in Wilsonville, OR. Leroy Ellsworth Blanchard was born in Afton, IA on March 6, 1897 the son of Edward and Edith Blanchard. He lived there until his parents moved to a farm near St. Lawrence in 1920. In 1923 he was married to Sarah Louise Woodruff. He purchased the Highway Garage in 1925 and operated it until 1934 when he sold the business and started work in the Hand County Welfare Office. He retired as Director of Welfare on December 31, 1970. During his 35 years of public service in welfare he was active in many community affairs. He was a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts for a number of years. He supervised the Hide-Out for three years which was a recreation program for area youth. Over the years he has been involved in many activities, a charter member of the Kiwanis, a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the advisory board of the Prairie Good Samaritan Center. He started the 49ers Square Dance Club in 1949 and also organized clubs in other areas of the state. He taught folk and square dancing and was in much demand as a caller. In 1972 he was active in organizing and was appointed supervisor for the Senior Citizen's Friendship Center. He helped Wessington and Highmore organized their centers. He was honored as "Man of the Year" by the Miller Business and Professional Women in 1977. He is survived by his wife, Louise; three daughters, Mrs. Rodney (LaVelle) Haas, Fremont, CA, Mrs. Harry (Lorraine) Keller, Northfield, MN and Mrs. William (Bonita) Newcomb, Colts Neck, NJ; eight grandchildren, Lynne Haas, Lanette Moehling, Lorene Girod, Paul, Wayne and Bruce Keller and Bradley and Bill Newcomb; two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Jeffrey Moehling; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Grewing and Mrs. George (Gertrude) Ice.Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 13 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Greenough officiating. Burial was in the GAR Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harlan Bushfield, Dr. James DeGeest, Rae Van Zee, Larry Van Zee, Douglas Phillips and Dale Van Zee.
