The Daily Inter Lake (Kalispell, Montana) February 23, 1933: Funeral services for Leroy Johnston were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Waggener & Campbell chapel. Rev. Harold Stark of the Presbyterian church officiated and two hymns were sung by the American Legion Auxiliary quartet. Burial was made in the family plot at Fairview Cemetery. Pall bearers, all sons of old neighbors of Mr. Johnston, were James V. Harrington, Gus Wendt, Walter Fehlberg, George Eckelberry, Jack Sheldon and Arthur Small. Obituary Leroy Johnston was born near Brownsville, Pennsylvania, April 25, 1859. When he was six years of age, the family moved by wagon train to Prairie City, Illinois. There his father died and at the age of 15 his mother gathered up the family of eight children again in a covered wagon and set out for Nebraska. Arriving there shortly after the "grasshopper year" they found conditions very difficult and remained only four years. Again in 1873 the little family set out with ox-team on the long three months trek which brought them to the Gallatin Valley where they settled. In June, 1885, Mr. Johnston and his brother Ruben, drove into the Flathead valley and took up adjoining homesteads east of the Flathead river. It was here he made his home until his retirement from farming seven years ago. In July 1892, Mr. Johnston was married to Miss Alberta Merritt of Dubuque, Iowa who had come to Montana to make an extended visit with her sister, Mrs. T. A. Churchill. Mrs. Johnston passed away November 12, 1925. Following her death, Mr. Johnston's health steadily failed, and he made his home with his children, his death occurring at the home of his son Glenn, near Kalispell, Sunday, February 19. Surviving relatives are two sons, Glenn and Merritt, of Kalispell, Mrs. Fay F. Steere of Butte, Mrs. Merle M. Sweeney and Mrs. Grace Barnum of Whitefish. A daughter Gladys died in infancy. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Eugene and Lois Steere, Thomas, Catherine and Robert Sweeney, and Glenn Leroy Jr.; also two brothers, Reuben and Preston, living near Columbia Falls and a sister, Mrs. A. McDonald, of Livingston. We wish to thank our neighbors and friends for their many kindnesses to us during our recent bereavement in the loss of our father, Leroy Johnston. Signed: Mr. and Mrs. M. J.
