Mr. Johnston came to the Territory of Montana in 1879 and settled for a time in the Gallatin Valley, making the trip to Montana Territory from Pennsylvania by covered wagon and oxen. Mr. Johnston came to the Territory of Montana in 1879 and settled for a time in the Gallatin Valley, making the trip to Montana Territory from Pennsylvania by covered wagon and oxen. He returned East and performed in Madison Square Garden and other eastern cities as a rider with Gleason's Western show. Two years later he returned to Belgrade and in 1891 built and operated a livery stable there. In 1905 he came to the Flathead. Mr. Johnston operated threshing machines, sawmills and a wrecker for the Great Northern Railway. He also operated the Klondike and the Queen, early steamboats on the Flathead Lake. He is survived by his widow, Wanda, at their home in Kalispell; two daughters, Mrs. Grover Kauffman of Kalispell, and Mrs. Douglas Tirke of Ronan; one son, Calvin Johnston, Kalispell, and seven grandchildren. Masonic funeral services for Mr. Johnston, who was a 52-year Mason, have been set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at Waggener and Campbell Chapel with the Columbia Falls Masonic Lodge 89, A.F.& A.M. holding ritualistic services. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Burial was in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Johnston was born March 14, 1862, in Fayette County, Pa., a son of Samuel and Pauline Sutton Johnston. The family later moved to Illinois and then to Nebraska. In May of 1879, the family came by covered wagon to Gallatin Valley, Montana. Mr. Johnston was a rider with a wild west show during his youth. He later operated a ranch and then built a livery stable at Belgrade. In 1905, Mr. Johnston came to the Flathead Valley. He went to Florida in the fall of 1911, but returned to the Flathead in 1913
