Description	:	LeRoy L. “Roy” Luke, 89, of Bowbells, died Friday, March 11, 1994 at his home of natural causes. His funeral was held Monday, March 14 in United Methodist Church, Bowbells. Burial will take place in the spring in the Bowbells Cemetery. Officiating for the service was Pastor Kenrad Pederson. Grace Melby was organist and soloist. Active Casketbearers included Rodney Larson, Arlen Gartner, Dennis Mellon, Doug Holter, LeLand Fischer, and Lee Alan Swenson. All other relatives and friends served as Honorary Casketbearers. All other relatives and friends served as Honorary Casketbearers. He was born May 26, 1904 at Oxford, Nebraska, a son of Jesse and Clara (Worthington) Luke. He was reared and educated there. As a young man he moved to the west coast where he worked a variety of jobs, and later on the railroad at Vancouver. He then moved to Bowbells and on October 16, 1944 he married the former Laura M. Swenson, at her parent’s home. He farmed in several locations in northwest North Dakota and except for two years spent in Stockton, CA, they resided in this area all of their married life. They purchased a farmstead on the Souris River, Renville County, near Sherwood, and resided there until 1970 when they purchased a farmstead and some acreage south of Lignite where they made their home until 1985 when they moved to Bowbells. She died January 30, 1994. He was well known in Burke County and the surrounding areas as an auctioneer and Deputy Sheriff at the Burke County Fair. He loved to hunt and fish and to share his stories of adventure. He introduced many people to the sport of raccoon hunting with dogs. He is survived by his sons, Larry, Rose Creek, MN, Lane, Wichita, KS, and Lonnie, Hawk Springs, WY; daughter, Linda Mellon, Devils Lake; son-in-law, Doug Holter, Berthold; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Jesse, Stockton, CA; sisters, Helen and Maxine, Stockton, CA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter, Joann Holter, one brother, and three sisters.
