Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Wright Funeral home with Father Daniel Fishburn in charge and burial was in the Ash Hollow cemetery near Lewellen. He had been born Roy Montague Brown, eldest of eight children born to John and Lillian Brown in Carlton, Illinois, August 24, 1872. At the age of five he moved with his family to Marion, Kansas, where he attended school. He later attended Manhattan Agriculture college which is now Kansas State university. For a short time he was a rural school teacher and later on worked for five years at St. Joseph, Missouri, for McCord Brady Wholesale grocers, traveling in the territory where he was to spend the remainder of his life. In 1903 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha McKee of Willow Island. To this unit were born six children, one succumbing in infancy. He and his wife moved to Lewellen in 1906 before there was even a railroad through the area. There was no "town" but a postoffice and Rohlfing's store. Mr. Brown "had a sack of coal and a few pieces of lumber" and opened the first lumber yard. He also engaged in the grain and livestock business. In later years he was associated with the late J. H. Lippincott in the Ford garage in Lewellen. The Browns made their home on a farm two miles west of Lewellen for many years, the place now owned by the Van Fishers. It was their home from 1915 until 1949 and during those years and all the time they lived in the Lewellen area Mr. Brown was interested in the development and improvement of the town, serving on the school board, fair board and in other civic organizations. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. In 1949 they moved to Willow Island, where they lived for five years. They spent a few months in California and then came to Oshkosh, where they have since made their home. An open house was held in June of 1953 in the home of their daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Jack Adams in Oshkosh. It marked the Golden Wedding anniversary. Survivors are his wife Martha; three sons, Paul Brown of Altadena, California, Charles Brown of Santa Barbara, California, and Francis Brown of Omaha; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Callen of Ogallala, and Mrs. Isabel Adams of Oshkosh; three brothers, Clarence Brown of Vancouver, Harry Brown of Vernal, Utah, and Guy Brown of Long Beach; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Taylor and Mrs. Mary B. Roberts, both of Long Beach; 10 grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Mr. Brown was a great believer in reading and always encouraged others to read. His family has therefore designated the Lewellen Public library as a memorial.
