Description	:	Leroy "Sonny" P. Clare, 95, of Wakonda, SD died Monday, March 9th at Wakonda Heritage Manor. Funeral Mass will be 10:00am Friday, March 13, 2009 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wakonda. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery, rural Wakonda. Visitation will be from 6 to 7pm Thursday, March 12, with a scripture service beginning at 7:00 pm at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Leroy was born June 24th, 1913 in Beresford, SD to Edward and Bernadette (Patterson) Clare. He moved to Wakonda at an early age with his parents and other family members. Leroy graduated from Wakonda High School in 1932. He worked at a grain elevator with his father and later managed the Wakonda Bowling Alley. Leroy entered the United States Air Force in June of 1942 thru 1945. Leroy and Twyla (Williams) were married June 21, 1948. He served as Postmaster in Wakonda for 28 years (1947-1975). Leroy and Twyla did volunteer work at Heritage Manor for many years. He was active in sports, and was a devoted fan. Sonny was also active in the Wakonda Community Club, Fire Department, Knights of Columbus and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was inducted into the first Irene-Wakonda Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Survivors include two sons, Dan (Dee) Clare of Sioux Falls, and John Clare of Bloomington, MN, also three grandchildren; James Clare of Sioux Falls, Jason D. Clare (Amy) of Kingwood, TX and Mary Yelick of West Des Moines, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Twyla, one son Thomas, a brother John and two sisters, Margaret and Evelyn (Billie Bruyer).
