Description	:	Leroy Saunders Foster, 83, passed away Monday, February 6, 2006. He was born October 2, 1922 and was a life-long resident of Mathews County. After farming in his younger years, he joined the military in 1943 and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was assigned to the 60th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division of the Army as a Rifleman 745. He was born October 2, 1922 and was a life-long resident of Mathews County. After farming in his younger years, he joined the military in 1943 and served in the European Theater during World War II. He was assigned to the 60th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division of the Army as a Rifleman 745. After landing on Omaha Beach and pushing his way through Europe, he participated in three major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. In September 1944, after pushing through enemy lines and losing radio contact with his unit, he was captured and survived eight months as a POW in Stalag 7 A in Munich, Germany, being released only at the end of the war. He received the following medals: European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Victory Medal, Good Conduct, Combat Infantry Badge, Sharpshooter M 1 Rifle and TSMG, and POW Medal. After returning from the war, he worked for the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Gloucester County for nine years. He then worked and retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., X42 Pipe Department, in 1983 after 30 years of service. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. He had a lifelong love for fishing, squirrel hunting and farming, eagerly sharing the many stories among family and friends. He could always be found tending his garden, tinkering in his shop with one of his many woodworking projects, or just making sure his old tractor was in top condition. He loved to play horseshoes and dominoes. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Iris Mae; his daughter, Dana Brown and her husband Bobby; his son Roy Foster and his wife Melissa; four grandsons, Roland Brown and wife Robin, Lee Brown, Willie Brown and Caleb Foster; one brother, Floyd Foster; and two great-granddaughters, Alyson and Shelley Brown. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Foster. He will always be remembered as a great friend and neighbor to all. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cobbs Creek with burial to follow at Windsor Gardens Cemetery, Dutton. A memorial service will also be held at Upper Essex Baptist Church, Caret, Va. At 4 p.m. Sunday, February 12.
