Les was a farmer first and last, from a long line of Hayes pioneer farmers who trekked across the continent. Their history dates back to Colonial times and beyond to Great Britain. He was born Oct. 12, 1914, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Clarence Parish "Bud" and Leza Louise Blair Hayes. Soon after, the family moved back to the Kittitas Valley after farming successes and failures, and there Les grew up and went to school in the Denmark and Kittitas school districts. Always a hard working man, Les traveled to find work where he could during the Great Depression and pre World Was II years. It was while working in Ventura, Calif., that he met and married Nina B. Meadows in 1937. With continued travel for work back and forth to the Kittitas Valley and California, their three children were born in Ventura, Ellensburg and Brawley. Eventually, during the war, Les planted his family near Ellensburg in the Badger Pocket and Denmark area, where he share-cropped with greater and greater success, until he was able to buy his own farm in block 15, Taylor Flats, north of Pasco in 1958. Les's success in farming in the Valley and Basin came from hard work and respect for the earth he tilled. He said, "You really don't own the land, you only borrow it for a time." His relationship with the soil brought him bountiful crops and the respect of his hard-working friends and neighbors. Les is survived by his wife of 61 years; brothers, Eugene Hayes of Ellensburg and Richard Hayes of Melbourne, Fla.; sister, Ruth Miller of Reno, Nev., and Dorothy Roletto of Gig Harbor; half-sisters, Alena Davis of Prosser and Roberta Copeland of Yakima; children, Marlene (Joe) Bordynoski of Willits, Calif., Larry (Julianna) Hayes of Kennewick and Joyce (John) Burrus of Pasco; grandchildren, Hunter, Michelle, Kayla, Ariel, Haisley, Jarod and Dylan B. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Una Wilgen of Ellensburg and brother Louis Hayes of Kittitas. A gathering of family and friends will take place at the family home at your leisure. Viewing will be from noon to 8 P.M. Friday, April 3, and noon to 5 P.M. Saturday, April 4, at Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home, 1608 W. Court St. Pasco. Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery on Brick Road in Ellensburg. At his request, no formal services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Pasco. American Heart Association in Pasco, American heart Association or the Kittitas School District Foundation in Kittitas.
