She lived 55 years in Franklin County and the Tri-Cities. She was a retired farmer. Nina and her twin sister were born May 22, 1919 in Hermitage, Hickory County, Missouri, the Daughters of Robert Emmet and Sarah Tennessee Meadows. She and her sister, completing a family of seven children, grew up in a farm community near Nemo, Missouri where they attended a one-room school through 8th grade and the local Baptist Church. There were stories she would tell about the fun the two sisters had growing up in Missouri. Like many Missourians during the Great Depression, much of Nina's family left the farm and scattered, mostly to California. She remembered the drive west in a rickety jalopy. There, Nina met and married Leslie Howard Hayes in 1937. April 14th was their 75th wedding anniversary. He was a migrant from Washington State. They lived and worked between the two states during WWII, building a family as they traveled, eventually settling after the war in the Kittitas Valley near Ellensburg, Washington where Leslie was a native, to raise their three children. Share-farming and Share-cropping was the life Nina and Les shared during those early years. They toiled together sometimes with meager crops and sometimes with bountiful success. A result of their hard work led to purchasing their own farm in the Columbia Basin north of Pasco, Washington in 1958. There, they expanded, continuing farming with greater and greater success. Retiring and traveling the US in their motor homes, visiting relatives, tracing and recording the genealogies of their families. They lived winters in Arizona and summers in Washington. Later, coming out of retirement to work the farm again until selling the land and retiring for good, moving to a small corner of their Block 15 land they loved. After Leslie's death in 1998, Nina and her twin sister lived on that corner before moving together to Pasco. Nina could often be seen mowing her big lawn on her big garden tractor, tending to her huge yard, flower garden and strawberry patch; a hard worker well into her 80's; farming her land. She also took loving care of her twin and helped with her son-in-law until their deaths' and invited close relatives to stay and live with her when they needed help. When it became too much to handle and had to move to a smaller home, she still had to have a garden place and lots of flowers. When she could no longer drive and tend to things, Nina spent the rest of her life at the Tri-Cities Retirement Inn in Pasco. Nina is loved and survived by her three children, Marlene (Dale Eslinger) of Pasco, Joyce (John Burrus) of Pasco, and Larry Hayes (Juliaana) of Kennewick; six grandchildren, Eric and Joe (Ski) Bordynoski, John and Jeff Burrus, Sarah McKinnion and Dylan Hayes; seven great-grandchildren, Hunter, Monique, Haisley, and Jarod Bordynoski, Kayla, Ariel and Dillon Burrus and one great-great-grandchild, Luke Byrd. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 61 years, Leslie; her twin, Mina Breeden; sisters, Frona Holsclaw and Hazel Greer; brothers, Frank, Howard and Doc Meadows; and son-in-law Joseph Bordynoski. Interment will be in the family plot in Ellensburg, Washington's IOOF Cemetery. She will be buried with her husband's ashes. There will be no services in Pasco. A get together of family and friends to remember Nina's life will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice, The Salvation Army or to any charity of choice . Mueller's Greenlee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
