Mr. Davis was born Aug. 19, 1934, in Sioux City, the son of Lester G. and Lulu M. (Sherman) Davis Sr. He lived in Sioux City all his life. He attended Everett Elementary School, West Junior High School and Central High School. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in September 1951, and served in the Korean Conflict. Following his tour of duty, he returned to Sioux City and worked at Sioux Tools for a brief period of time. He married Jackie Jean Leinart on Sept. 15, 1956, in Sioux City. In August 1956, he began working for the Iowa State Highway Commission, now the Iowa Department of Transportation, in the construction department as a rodman. He retired as a Tech I after 40 years of service in August 1997. He helped build many bridges and highways. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed fishing, traveling to San Diego to whale watch and to Albuquerque, N.M. to ride the tram to the top of Sandia Peak. He enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, Estes Park in the fall and hearing herds of elks bugle. He also enjoyed riding his bike along the river front, gathering drift wood and attending Broadway plays at the Orpheum Theater. He was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the Sioux City Explorers and Bandits, the Kansas City Chiefs and watching football and basketball (as known as roundball) on television. He enjoyed yard work and his yard was like a mini park and was the envy of all who had the pleasure of viewing his labor. He loved flowers and hated weeds. Survivors include his wife, Jackie of Sioux City; a son Michael Glen Davis of Sioux City; two brothers, Gerald and Dennis Davis; three sisters, Norma J. and her husband, Huntz Taylor, of Sioux City, Virginia M. Weigel of McCook Lake, S.D., and Lois A. Davis; his stepmother-in-law, Beverly Leinart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two brothers-in-law and their wives,, Bob and Myrna Leinart of Fort Collins, Colo., and Ron and Tina Leinart of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and many nieces, nephews and longtime neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Lello. Memorials may be directed to St. Boniface Catholic Church.
