Description	:	KRON, Iowa -- Gerald "Jerry" Davis, 81, of Akron passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Embassy Rehab and Care Center in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carlsen Funeral Home-Schroeder Chapel in Akron, with Pastor Michelle Williamson of Whitfield United Methodist Church in Sioux City, officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery at Akron. Gerald Verlyn Davis was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Smithland, Iowa, the son of Lester and Lulu Mae (Sherman) Davis. Early in his childhood, his family moved to Sioux City. Gerald attended school in Sioux City. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country during World War II. While stationed onboard the U.S.S. Bunkerhill, he was a cook. He was honorably discharged. Gerald went to work for Union Pacific Railroad; he worked for them for many years as a switchman. Later, he worked for many other businesses throughout the country. In 1986, he settled back in the area. He lived in Westfield, Iowa, for several years before moving to Akron. Gerald enjoyed the outdoors; he loved to go fishing, gardening, growing flowers and feeding birds. He also enjoyed cooking for friends and family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Boise, Idaho; five children, Nancy Lewis of Sioux City, Thomas Davis of Sergeant Bluff, Gary Davis and his wife, Kathy of Sioux City, Regina Davis of Bountiful, Utah, and Raina Zapata of Las Vegas, Nev.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Dennis Davis of Elk Point, S.D.; a sister, Lois Davis of Elk Point, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Jackie Davis of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lester; and three sisters, Betty, Virginia and Norma.
