Description	:	BRITT — Lester W. Gayken, 75, of Britt died of natural causes on May 14, 2003. He passed on in comfort and in the company of his family. Graveside memorial services for Lester William Gayken will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. He passed on in comfort and in the company of his family. Graveside memorial services for Lester William Gayken will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Britt Ceremonial Unit. Lester, the son of Frank and Anna Marie Gayken, was born in Britt on Feb. 20, 1928. He attended Britt Schools. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944. It was during his second tour of duty, while stationed in Stockton, Calif., that he was united in marriage with his companion of over 50 years, Lois Gayken (Clark). They also had their first son, Robert, while in California. The family returned to Britt in 1952, where they soon were blessed with a daughter, Charlla, and another son, Jim. Lester provided for his family as a hard working carpenter, eventually co-founding Love & Gayken Const. (1958-1978). He has left his mark in and around the community, by putting up many structures that will remain standing for years to come. He retired from the business in 1983 and traveled around the country with his wife, visiting family members throughout the United States. Les liked to sit on his front porch with his family, taking in the day's weather, handing out advice, and playing the occasional game of cribbage. He enjoyed having his morning coffee and spending his afternoons golfing with his friends. There was also a special spot in his heart for the "useless" dogs that accompanied him throughout his lifetime. He is survived by his three children, Bob Gayken and his wife, Dorie, of Roundtop, Texas, Charlla Lundgren of Britt, and Jim Gayken and his wife, Dawn, of Britt; three grandchildren, Erik, Beth, and Paul; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Caitlyn; one brother, Bud Gayken of Britt; and three sisters, Verna Brown of Britt, Blanche Gill of Britt, and Blondie Peterson of Goodell. He will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death and was greeted in the afterlife by his wife, Lois, infant daughter, and his parents.
