Description	:	Lewis "Darwin" Townsend, 75, passed away suddenly Thursday night, December 29, 2005, at his home in East Wenatchee. He was born on August 9, 1930, in Dierks, Arkansas to Lewis and Lula (Kesterson) Townsend. Darwin, along with his three sisters were raised in Arkansas and Texas. Read More	Lewis "Darwin" Townsend, 75, passed away suddenly Thursday night, December 29, 2005, at his home in East Wenatchee. He was born on August 9, 1930, in Dierks, Arkansas to Lewis and Lula (Kesterson) Townsend. Darwin, along with his three sisters were raised in Arkansas and Texas. The family moved to the Wenatchee Valley in 1944. As a young man, Darwin spent his early years working in numerous orchards around the Valley. On May 15, 1948, he married Lois M. Walker of Omak, WA. After their marriage they made their home in the Wenatchee Valley, where they spent the rest of their lives. In 1951, Darwin joined the U.S. Army. After basic training he was transferred to Hawaii. And shortly after, he was again transferred, and was stationed in Germany. In 1953, Darwin and Lois had their first child, a girl, they named Deborah. Two years later their son was born, Greg. Darwin remained in the Army Reserve with the status of Sergeant for many years after being discharged from active duty. Shortly after returning to Wenatchee he joined the Wenatchee Police Force, and then transferred to the Chelan County Sheriff's office, where he remained until the late 1960's. In 1965, he realized a lifelong dream of owning his own orchard. He farmed the 60 acre orchard on Grant Road for almost 15 years. After selling the orchard, he dabbled in many different things – Real Estate, building houses for his family and finally settling on owning a small orchard on 6th Street in East Wenatchee. He also became a Journeyman Union Electrician, which he retired from. After Lois passed away, Darwin was fortunate enough to meet a wonderful woman named Kate Murdock who loved to travel as much as Darwin did. They spent several winters down South traveling in their RV enjoying the deserts, mountains and exploring many historical sites. Darwin is survived by his two children and their spouses, Debbi (Greg) Marney of Seattle, Washington, Greg (Cathy) Townsend, of East Wenatchee, Washington; and his four grandchildren, Seth Hallock and Ryan Hallock of Bellingham, Washington, and A.J. Townsend and Toya Townsend of East Wenatchee; and a very special woman and companion who made his life very happy during these past years, Kate Murdock. He is also survived by three sisters, Juanita Richardson, Jo Pate and Clara Carlson, all of Wenatchee; along with numerous aunts; uncles; cousins and many very special friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; and his parents, Lewis and Lula Townsend. Graveside Services were held on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at Evergreen Memorial in East Wenatchee. Arrangements made by Betts Funeral Services in Wenatchee, WA.
