However, he seemed to be all right last night; when he retired, but was stricken in his sleep. One of Clay County's most progressive farmers, Mr. Kretzmeier specialized in melons, vegetables, and grains in recent years. Born in Lawrenceville, Ind., he came to Kansas when 45 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Kretzmeier lived in their modern farm home northwest of Clay Center 40 years, retiring last fall to take life easier, they moved to their present home in this city. They paid a visit to their son, M Sgt. Calvin Kretzmeier at Ft. Hays, Ind., and to the old home in Indiana, in September. Surviving Mr. Kretzmeier are his wife; one son, M.Sgt. Calvin Kretzmeier; two grandchildren; one brother, O.R. Kretzmeier, Manhattan; one sister, Mrs. Lucy Lods, Lafayette, Ind. and other relatives. A daughter, Irene, died in childhood and another daughter, Ivy Kretzmeier Oppey, preceded her father in death a few years ago. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Peterson-Neill Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest A. Hull officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Source: Unknown * * * Because of his friendliness and optimistic outlook on life, L. E. Kretzmeier will be missed in the family circle in the community where he resided so many years ago. He had a greeting and good word for everyone, and being a good neighbor and friend, he had friends without number. His life story is written as follows: Lewis E. Kretzmeier, who was born at Lawrenceville, Indiana on Nov. 17, 1870, passed away at his home in Clay Center, Kansas on Jan. 23, 1947. Lewis was the son of Louis and Catherine Kretzmeier. On April 17th, 1894 Lewis E. Kretzmeier and Miss Emma Brose were united in marriage. The ceremony, performed by the Methodist Episcopal minister, Rev. Mr. Johannes, was in the home of the bride. To this union, three children were born: Irene Ivy, born June 13, 1895, and passed away on March 23, 1898; Ivy Lucy, born August 13, 1900, was married to Clarence M. Oppy May 25, 1826. Mrs. Oppy passed away Sept. 17, 1936; Calvin Lewis was born on Nov. 8, 1911. On August 1, 1943 Calvin was united in marriage with Miss Anthy Thomas of Piedmont, South Dakota. Mr. Kretzmeier began his life work as a school teacher but after eleven years he decided to farm. In 1901 Mr. and Mrs. Kretzmeier moved to a farm near Broughton and Clay Center. After five years, they bought the farm four miles west of Clay Center and made it into an attractive modern farm home where they resided for forty years. Just last September the Kretzmeiers retired from this farm home and purchased a new home at 411 Clark street. On April 17th, 1944 Mr. and Mrs. Kretzmeier celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary. Since retiring from the farm they enjoyed a visit in the State of Indiana. Mr. Kretzmeier took keen delight in renewing old time friendships, especially with boyhood schoolmates, and visiting his old home place. Although Mr. Kretzmeier was not in good health, his last illness was only of a few minutes duration. The afternoon before, he had been down town visiting with friends. Despite the sense of shock which came to the family, there is a sense of fitness in such a conclusion to an active helpful life. He will be remembered for his devotion to his home, and a genuine love for his chosen work. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, January 26, at the Peterson-Neill Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest A. Hull of the First Methodist church officiating. Mrs. R. U. McClenahan and Miss Beth McClenahan, with Mrs. V. R. Vergades as accompanist, sang "Rock of Ages," "Sometime We'll Understand," and "Abide With Me." Burial was made in Greenwood cemetery. The body bearers were Howard Geer, Ervin Oelschlager, Alfred Bauer, Fritz Meenen, Riley Woellhof, and Alfred Murphy. The large assembly of relatives and friends and beautiful flowers were symbols of esteem and sympathy. Relatives coming from a distance were M Sgt. Oppy, Billy and Richard, Wllington; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Schurr, Lindsborg; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Hammon and children, Bushton; Mrs. Wm Oppy, Mr. and Mrs. Gilford Schurr, St George; Mr. and Mrs. Orville Kretzmeier Topeka.
