( Jarvis) – This community received a severe shock Sunday morning when the announcement was made that L.J. (Jarvis) Reed was dead. Although he had not been entirely well for several days he was able to be up and about Saturday and nothing at all serious was apprehended, his indisposition supposed to be the result of neuralgia. About one o'clock Sunday morning he aroused Mrs. Reed, stating that he was feeling badly. The other members of the household were aroused and a physician summoned. Everything possible was done but Mr. Reed grew worse, expiring about 3 a.m. He was conscious until the very last and talked with members of the family about his affairs. Death was due to congestion and heart trouble. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Auditorium which is being used by the members of the Second Baptist Church, of which deceased was a member, as a place of worship. The services were in charge of Eld. J.R. Barnett, pastor of the Second Baptist Church, assisted by Eld D.C. Hardin, who was called from Dallas, Texas for that purpose. Mr. Hardin, who was formerly pastor of the Baptist Church, here, paid a beautiful and touching tribute to the memory of the deceased. He was pastor here when Mr. Reed was converted and baptized him and said that news that one of his own brothers was dead could have caused no greater shock than the intelligence of the death of Mr. Reed. It was one of the most largely attended funerals ever held in Springdale, the Auditorium being crowded to its capacity, attesting to the esteem in which deceased was held. The remains were interred in Bluff Cemetery. L.J. Reed was a son of John and Sarah Reed and was born near where he died December 22, 1856. Practically his entire life was spent in this community. February 18, 1883 he was untied in marriage to Elizabeth Kelcher. To this union were born nine children, eight of whom are living, a son having died in infancy. Of the surviving children there are four daughters and four sons as follows: Kate, wife of Walter Finley, residing at Westville, Ok.; Ollie, who is teaching near Westville; John, residing west of Springdale and Fred, Charlie, Lydia, Joe and Ruth. Deceased is also survived by three brothers, A.M., Lee and Bob, and one sister, Nannie, wife of J.M. Bench. All were present at the funeral. In March 1891 deceased made a profession of religion and united with the Baptist Church and was one of its most faithful and devoted members through the remaining years of his life. {The ink on the remainder of this item is too faded to read }
