Description	:	Obituary From "Ottumwa Courier," December 26, 1960: Lewis L. Gates, 69, of Ottumwa route one, died at 3:30 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant. He had been an Ottumwa public works employee for seven years prior to his retirement two years ago. He was born January 7, 1891, in Ottumwa, the son of Doc and Eliza Rizor Gates, and had been a resident of Wapello county all of his life. Survivors include two sons, Edwin Gates of Ottumwa, and Lewis Gates, Jr. of Palmdale, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Edna Burkinbine of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Archie Carnes of Ottumwa. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, a daughter and five sisters. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel with the Rev. Robert Swanson of the Fairfield Nazarene church in charge. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Pallbearers will be George Swope, Paul Jackson, Lewis Gray, Marion Cooper, Jewell Leedom and Harold L. Smith.
