Read More	THE PASSING Of LEWIS LAHMON Prominent Gillett Grove Resident Died Last Week; Health Was Failing Several Years Past Gillett Grove, March 5— Lewis Lahmon, for years one of the most highly respected residents of this part of the county, died at 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26 1919. For the past few years his health had been failing and on November 25, 191S, he went to the hospital at Colfax, Iowa, for medical treatment, but there was scarcely no hope for material improvement and it was a losing light from the first, so, after three months of intense suffering he fell asleep in death. During the last six weeks of His life, Leon A. Witter was almost his constant attendant, but all his efforts to bring relief to the sufferer were vain as the dread disease had assumed the most virulent form. Lewis Lahmon was born near Mount Vernon, Ohio, on September 8, 1854, and wan one of nine children born to James and Margaret Lahmon. In 1806 the family moved to Cedar county, Iowa, where they lived until the spring of, 1872, when they came to Clay county and settled on a farm in Logan township about three miles southeast of Gillett Grove. After the death of the father, January 6, 1893, Lewis assumed control of the farm and engaged in general farming and stock raising until 1904, when he built a cottage on the wooded elope west of Gillett Grove and it was here he spent the remainder of his life. His home was shared by his eldest and widowed sister, Mrs. EIiza A. Howard. The deceased is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Ann Howard and Mrs. D. C. Palmer, the later living at 783 east Park avenue, Spencer. Besides these there are two brothers, Jonathan of Cedar county, Iowa, and Henry of Cedar Rapids. One sister, Mrs. Mary Ellen Maclay, preceded him in death in April 191S, and one brother, Jacob, died at Mount Vernon, Ohio, October 11, 1918. His mother died, October 8, 1894. Mr. Lahmon always took an active and intelligent interest in the commercial and political life of the county and few men were better informed concerning the current events. Pie served his community in various capacities. His services were always cheerfully given and his work well and thoroughly done. His sunny disposition and unfailing cheerfulness endeared him to members of his family and won for him many friends, who will miss his smiling face and hearty greetings. Mr. Lahmon was in no sense a seeker after public office but when such trust was reposed in him he was faithful in the highest degree. He served with credit as trustee of Gillett Grove township and as president of the school board for the Gillett Grove Independent School District for three years, besides serving in a like capacity in Logan Township before moving to Gillett Grove. It was during his term of office that the Gillett Grove consolidated school district was organized and to him much credit is due for the substantial school building, as he gave the most careful attention and supervision to every detail when the building was being erected. Some years ago Mr. Lahmon formed a business partnership with his friend and neighbor, Samuel Ferguson and together they built the substantial business block in Gillett Grove. They owner! these buildings in partnership at the time of his death. Mr. Lahmon has been on the director of the of the Gillett Grove Savings Hank and to him is due, in a large measure, the success and popularity of the institution. As has been mentioned, Mr. Lahmon manifested much interest in commercial and political affairs of the county and was almost invariably chosen as one of the clerks or judges of each general or special election last November. It must be said that Mr. Lahmon was most careful and prompt in all his business relations a nd was orderly in his habits; and his premises was a model of order and neatness Spencer Reporter.
