Somers, one of Crisfield's oldest residents, died in the Friendly Nursing Home in Delmar last Sunday evening, where he had been a patient for about eleven weeks. Somers, one of Crisfield's oldest residents, died in the Friendly Nursing Home in Delmar last Sunday evening, where he had been a patient for about eleven weeks. He would have been 90 years of age had he lived until April. Born in Crisfield April 20th, 1865, he was the son of the late John and Mary Jane Adams Somers. He had lived here all his whole life. Mr. Somers was a blacksmith by profession, and owned and operated for many years one of the largest establishments of the kind on the Eastern Shore, devoted largely to iron work for vessels and making crab and oyster scrapes and kindred items. His place of business for a long time was on the waterfront next to where the Packers Ice plant is now located. He was a man of integrity and great industry, a master of his craft, and his great pleasure was in his home and family life. He liked people and lost no opportunity to help them when help was needed. He had friends all along the Chesapeake Bay watercourses, many of whom came from great distances to have their work done in his shop. Kindly and friendly, Mr. Somers was a good citizen all his long life. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock in the Bradshaw & Sons Funeral Home on Main street, conducted by Rev. A.T. McFarland. Interment was in the Crisfield Cemetery. Bearers were Charles W. Howeth, Norman Nelson, Mitchell Purcell, Gordon Adams, Arthur Carmine and Granville Evans. Mr. Somers is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mattie Cook Somers, and the following children: Kirk Somers and Mrs. Lloyd Carmine of Crisfield; Lewis Somers of Baltimore; Raymond Somers of Prospect, Park, Pa.; Mrs. Leroy Heilman of Annville, Pa.; thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
