The death of Lewis Spies of Cumberland, which occurred Monday morning at his home in that town, followed an illness with cancer of long duration, the last year of which was filled with intense suffering. The distance first made its appearance about seven or eight years ago in his face, and slowly continued its ravages until it had destroyed all his features. Despite his pain Mr. Spies bore his affliction cheerfully until the end. Old Resident of County. The deceased had lived in Cass county nearly fifty-four years. He was 72 years old, born November 13, 1848, the youngest son of Jacob and Elizabeth Spies, who immigrated to this country from Germany when Lewis was a mere infant. At the age of 18 he came to Cass county making his home on farms near Cumberland, since that time, with the exception of several years spent in Kansas. He was married in December, 1871 to Katherine Engelhardt. He gave up farming and moved to town about seven years ago, when his illness became serious in nature. Leaves Large Family. Mr. Spies is survived by his wife who gave him constant care during his sickness, and eight children: Lewis Spies and Mrs. Louisa Smith of Mitchell, South Dakota; Mrs. Anna Strong, Henry Spies, Mrs. Kate Brown, Mrs. Ida Eberle, and Mrs. Grace Morgan of Cumberland; and Mrs. Vela Deer of Kansas City. Four children preceded their father in death. He also leaves two sisters: Miss Maggie Spies of Cumberland and Mrs. Elizabeth Sting of Portland, Oregon. William and John Spies of this city, and George Spies are nephews. Funeral Wednesday. All of the children were present at the funeral which was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist church in Cumberland, of which the deceased and his family are members. The Rev. A.
