By the death of Mr. Lewis Peogson, West Pennant Hills, and the Hills district generally, lose a man whose name was a household one. The deceased gentlemen had been ailing for upwards of two years, and death took place on March 20th. Throughout his protracted illness, Mr. Pogson exhibited wonderful fortitude; he was always cheerful and never gave up. A native of Bradford (England) Mr. Pogson came to Australia with his father when only five years old. Settling at West Pennant HIills, the father was for many years a successful orchardist. The sons followed similar pursuits. The late Mr. Pogson married Miss Louisa Carr, of Parramnatta. His wife, two sons and three daughters survive him. These include: Mrs. Zadock Bellamy (Pennant IIills), Mrs. Pollard (Thornleigh), Mrs. Snelgrove (Maroota), Mr. Cecil Pogson (Pennant Hills) and Mr. Harry Pogson (Carlingford). The funeral, which took place at the Methodist Cemetery, West Pennant Hills, on March 21st, bore eloquent testimony to the esteem in which Mr. Pogson was held. The attendance was particularly large and fully representative of the Hills district generally. The Revs. Dyer, Young-man and Dixon conducted a short service at the house, and subsequently at the church where there was a large gathering. Reference was made to the career of the late Mr. Pogson, his work in connection with the church, his good citizenship, and his blameless life. He was held up as an example worthy of emulation. The deceased gentlemen was organist and choirmaster at West Pennant Hills Methodist Church for 40 years. Surely this remarkable period of voluntary service is a record! Discussing Mr. Pogson on Tuesday last, a friend of many years standing described him as being essentially a "singing man." He put his heart and soul into the musical portion of the church services, and his spirit was infectious. The high standard of music at this church was the result of his untiring efforts. His loss to the church is irreparable. It is interesting to note that Mr. W. R. Hawkins, of Eastwood, and formerly of Dural, who was a music pupil of the late Mr. Pogson, played the "Dead March in Saul" at the funeral service. Among the chief mourners were Messrs. Seth, Dan and Byron Pogson, brothers of the deceased. The surviving sisters are Mrs. Birks, Mrs. Leslie Banks, and Mrs. Harold Kentwell.
