Ross, a native of Corydon, had lived in Des Moines 56 years. He was a graduate of Corydon High School and Drake University, and a member of University Christian Church. Following his retirement from Langan Paper Co, eight years ago, Ross owned and operated the LW Ross Confectionery at SW 5th Street and Army Post Road. Survivors include his wife, Lucile; one son, Lewis Jr, of Des Moines, six daughters, 18 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The six daughters are Mrs. Olga Snapp of Mechanicsburg, OH; Mrs. Carma Johnson of Hartsburg, MO, Mrs. Zelphia Leverich of OKC, OK, Mrs. Zola Tripe of Minneapolis, MN and Mrs. Glois Gilbert and Miss Rossina Ross, both of Des Moines. FROM THE DES MOINES REGISTER 11/30/1994, Des Moines, Polk Co, IA. "My great-grandparents Lewis and Lucile Ross owned a skating rink with a restaurant across the street from Ft Des Moines at least 50 years ago on Army Post Road. What was the name of their business?" Their Reply--We found no mention of a skating rink owned by your great grandparents; we did, however, find the Lewis Ross Confectionary listed in the 1944 city directory at 503 Army Post Road. But that wasn't all. In a June 1950 clipping, we found your great-grandfather also was a politician. Lewis W. Ross, then 64, had operated his confectionary in the Ft. Des Moines area for 20 years, according to the article. He had been Bloomfield towwnship Clerk in 1937-38 and Bloomfield township Justice of the Peace. He had also taught in country schools, worked for the Postal Telegraph Co, a barber supply company and operated the Drake Dress Club for five years. He was born in Corydon and graduated from Drake University in 1909. He and his wife lived at the same address as their business and had six daughters and one son. They had lived in Bloomfield Township 29 years. There was a later response to this article dated 12/7/1994 from the same newspaper: Chester Harvey of Des Moines, regarding the Ross Confectionary at 503 Army Post Road, recalls that there was a skating rink at the confectionary. The confectionary which sold pop and candy was in the front part of a two-story building. The second floor, he recalls, was where the roller rink was located. It also served as a dance hall for square dances. Chester said the roller rink was not advertised, and he wasn't surprised it wasn't listed in the city directory. Everyone knew where the roller skating rink was without the advertising, he said."
