Colusa Sun Herald, Tuesday, May 9, 1939: "Mrs. Newton Is Dead At 87. Mrs. Lida California Pitcher Newton, 87, long-time resident of Princeton, where she had conducted the Princeton Hotel since 1894, died at 8:45 last night at her home after a lingering illness. She was one of the best known and loved women in the Princeton district. Death was due to the infirmities of her advanced age. "Mrs. Newton was born November 20, 1851, in Tennessee, and came west when a young girl. She was a member of Wild Rose Chapter No. 326, Eastern Star, which she joined February 28, 1918. "She is survived by five daughters: Hattie Pitcher, Viola Baldwin, Alice Applegate, Bertha David, and Lottie Soberanes, all of Princeton, and Minnie Eddy of Oroville. Four grandchildren and a great granddaughter also survive. Her husband died a number of years ago. "Mrs. Newton has resided in Princeton for 52 years. In the conduct of the Princeton Hotel she made many friends. The pioneer hostelry has always had a reputation for its fine meals and homey atmosphere for its guests. "Funeral services for Mrs. Newton will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Princeton Methodist church with the Rev. B.S. McCann officiating. Wild Rose chapter of Eastern Star will have charge of graveside rites, to be made under direction of J.D. McNary & Son. Mrs. Newton was the widow of the late Austin Newton of Princeton." ~~~ The Chico Enterprise, May 9, 1939: Hotel Owner Passes. Last Rites To Be Held Thursday in Princeton Church. Mrs. Lida Pitcher Newton, 88, for the past 55 years proprietress of the widely known Princeton Hotel, one of the oldest caravansaries on the Sacramento river, passed away calmly at her hotel home at 8:45 o'clock last night, following a long illness, surrounded by members of her household. The deceased had been injured in a fall several years ago and had been much of a cripple ever since. Her health had been ailing steadily of late. Funeral Rites To Be Thursday. Last rites for the near nonagenarian will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Princeton Methodist church with Rev. B.S. McCann officiating and interment by J.D. McNary & Son with the members and officers of Wild Rose Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Princeton of which the deceased was an ardent member and a very active worker for years, in charge of the graveside rites. The deceased was born in Smith county, Tennessee on November 10, 1851. She was united in marriage to Samuel Pitcher in Tennessee and the two landed in Princeton along in 1884, according to best available information. Several months thereafter the couple took over the management of the Princeton hotel, then one of the noted nesting places along the Sacramento river. Pitcher passed away in 1892. Along in 1900 she married David Austin Newton, who passed away a number of years ago. In 1918 the deceased became a member of Wild Rose Chapter No. 326 of the Order of Eastern Star. Within recent years, and particularly since she became unable to walk about, the members of the order made an annual pilgrimage to her hotel home, usually on her birthday anniversary. It was always one of the outstanding events in her retiring years. Five Daughters Are Survivors. The deceased leaves to survive her five daughters; Miss Hattie Pitcher, Mrs. Viola Baldwin, Mrs. Alice Applegate, Mrs. Bertha Davis and Mrs. Lottie Sobranes, all residing in or near Princeton, and Minnie Eddy of Oroville, and all being in constant attendance upon their mother, who had been faithful to them in their early days of school and rearing. The surviving grandchildren include Amelia Ross, of Sacramento, Odell and Odley Applegate and Mildred Applegate Kesterson, also all of the Princeton area.
