Read More	Lassen Mail, Susanville, CA May 17, 1912 2:2 AGED VETERAN LOSES AGAINST DEATH SPECTER Thomas Jefferson Millsap Succumbs to Fatal Illness One by one, as fast almost as the falling leaves of autumn, the old heroes who fought for the preservation of the union are dropping from the ranks. The latest to succumb to the rigors of old age and disease was Thomas Jefferson Millsap, who died at Tuledad, this county, April 24, 1912, at the home of his son, M. L. Millsap, at the age of 82 years. The aged veteran had made his home with his son in his declining years and was a universal favorite with everybody on account of his cheerful and gentle disposition and never failing good humor. The following short obituary has been prepared by his sorrowing neighbors and friends. Thomas Jefferson Millsap died June 24, 1912, at the home of his son, M. L. Millsap, at Tuledad, Lassen county, California. Stricken with a fatal fever on the 16th of June, the anniversary of his birth, he lingered for a ___ days while loving friends and relatives did all in their power for him, but in vain. Calm and peaceful was the ending of a long and useful life. "Grandpa" Millsap, as he was familiarly called by all, had been a pioneer in the upbuilding of four states. Born near Knoxville, Tenn, April 16, 1829, he was united in marriage to Miss Malvina Scott in 1850. Together the young couple commenced life in Missouri, where their nine children were born. They passed through the trying days of border warfare in 1861, when Lincoln called for defenders of the flag. Millsap enlisted in Company M, Ninth, Kansas calvary in which he served until the close of the war. When his services as a soldier were no longer required he began farming in Cherokee county, Kansas, where a few years later, death visited the home, leaving him a widower. To find distraction from his grief he sought new scenes, crossing the plains to Nevada in 1874. For 38 years he was engaged in ranching and stock raising in Washoe county, Nevada, and Modoc and Lassen counties, this state. In 1906 he was married at Reno to Mrs. Sarah Abbee. His devotion and tenderness to this woman in her helpless invalidism in life's sunset was characteristic of the man. He leaves to mourn his loss one son, M. L. Millsap of Tuledad, Cal.; tow daughters, Mrs. L. C. Newton, Princeton, Cal., and Mrs. Sarah Hickey of San Francisco, a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren and many friends who admired him for his many estimable qualities of heart, his quick appreciation of right, his fixed principles in life to deal justly between man and man regardless of consequences, his loyalty as a soldier, his sturdiness as a pioneer, his uprightness as a citizen and his kindness as neighbor and friend. Time is thinning the ranks of the old soldiers, but it strengthens the love of people for them. They are sleeping their last sleep Under the flag they died to save, Decked with the garlands Of a soldier's grave. Spring's fairest blossoms shall mark where they lie The heroes whose glories shall never die. Under the stars of heaven's blue Cared for by love rest the brave and true. Long as the star spangled banner waves, Garlands we'll weave for our heroes graves.
