Description	:	Lieut. Alvah Heald was the son of Eli B. and Susan Heald, born May, 30, 1942 in Temple, N.H. His ancestors came to this country as early as 1635 and some of them served in the French and Indian Wars. The school voted to let him go and thus many students' patriotism was stimulated. Among those students was young Heald who enlisted in Petersborough on Oct. 28, 1861 and assigned to Company E, Sixth New Hampshire Regiment. Having reenlisted on Jan. 4, 1864, he served till the close of the war, being with his regiment most of the entire time, and in most of the battles it was engaged." Alvah Heald writes "Of narrow escapes, one was at Fort Hell in a night attack by the rebels. The regiment was ordered to another part of the line, and I, being a little behind time, thought I would catch up with the regiment, by a short cut over the top of the breastworks. Being partly up a tree and eight inches through, by which I was climbing to the top of the works, I saw the flash of a rebel gun, and judged that the shot would come close to me. I jumped to the ground, assisted by a splinter from the tree as large as a man's arm, which knocked me several feet away, while the tree itself came down beside me with a crash. Surgeon Noyes plastered up the bruises in the morning, and I went to duty as usual."
