Hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sharp and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Sharp. An evening of visiting followed the meal. There were places for the honored guest, and Virginia McFee, Margaret McFee, Romayre Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Motter, Mrs. Mae Ewart, Harry Kunecke, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Sharp, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Sharp and son, Neal, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sharp. --------------- The Daily Times Herald, Carroll, Iowa, Thursday, March 9, 1944: Carroll Man Is Killed In Plane Crash Lt. Erin L. Ewart, 27, One of 7 to Die in Midair Collision Second Lt. Erin L. Ewart, 27, bombardier, was one of two Iowans who were victims of a plane crash yesterday at Lake Charles, La., in which seven airmen were killed. Mrs. Ewart, the former Virginia McFee, called her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.B. McFee from Shreveport, La., at 6 o'clock last night to inform them of the tragedy. Lake Charles is about 200 miles from Barksdale Field, Shreveport, where Lt. Ewart was stationed. Mrs. Ewart has been at Shreveport with him. According to an Associated Press dispatch, the crash resulted from a collision in flight between a Barksdale medium bomber and a pursuit plane from the DeRidder, La., air base, field authorities said. Staff Stg. Everett D. Tordoff, 27, armorer-gunner, whose mother, Mrs. Jessie Peterson, lives at Alden, Ia., was the other Iowa victim. Mrs. Ewart has been informed that her husband's body will be shipped directly from Lake Charles to Carroll, but it may be several days before the body arrives here. If Mrs. Ewart is able to secure transportation on a plane, she expects to fly to Omaha today and arrive in Carroll tonight. Lt. Ewart's mother, Mrs. Mae Ewart, who had been visiting her son and daughter-in-law, had started home from Shreveport yesterday morning. Lt. Ewart, who had gone into the armed forces as a volunteer, had been in the service since Feb. 20, 1941. He was commissioned second lieutenant in December 1943, upon graduation from the army air force bombardier school at Kirtland Field, Albuquerque, N. Mex., following completion of 18 weeks of flight and combat training in high level precision bombing and navigation. He also received the "wings" of the aerial bombardier, supplementing his previously won aerial gunner's insignia. Prior to his advanced training at Kirtland Field, Lt. Ewart was stationed at Kingman, Ariz. where he was graduated from the army air forces flexible gunnery school. Since last December, he had been stationed at Barksdale Field. He had also spent a year at Ft. Lewis, Wash. He had expected to be assigned out from his post Saturday, and Mr. and Mrs. McFee had planned to leave last night for Shreveport for a short visit with him and his wife. At the time of entering the armed forces, Lt. Ewart was employed by the Western Grocer company here. He had attended high school at Glidden. His marriage to Miss Virginia McFee took place Jan. 17, 1942, at Tacoma, Wash. Surviving with his wife are his mother, Mrs. Mae Ewart of Carroll, who is working in Burlington at present, his father, William Ewart of Marcus, Ia., and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Sharp of Carroll, who are also in Burlington at present. --------------- The Daily Times Herald, Carroll, Iowa, Saturday, March 11, 1944: Lt. Erwin Ewart Funeral Rites To Be Held Monday Funeral services for Lieut. Erwin Ewart, the victim of a plane crash in Louisiana Wednesday are to be held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the Methodist Church here. The Rev. W.F. Clayburg of Council Bluffs, former minister of the local church, will officiate, assisted by the pastor, the Rev. Robert M. Peters. Members of Carroll Lodge No. 279 I.O.O.F. will attend the rites in a body. They are requested to meet at the Odd Fellows hall at 2 p.m. Lieut. Ewart will be buried with military honors in the Carroll Cemetery. The body will arrive in Carroll at midnight Sunday and will be taken to the Huffman Funeral Home to rest there until the hour of the services.
