George was the son of John Laing and Elizabeth (Buzzard) Laing. He was a veteran of Co. I, 4th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. He was promoted again to Full Quartermaster Sergaent on December 18, 1864 and finally to Full 1st Lieutenant on April 21, 1865. He was mustered out on July 24, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. George's brother, Robert, was also a Captain the same company and regiment. They fought in some of the major battles of the Civil War including Pea Ridge, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and Kenesaw Mountain, among other engagements.
