| Description | : | One of six children of Ezra Warner French and Amanda Roberts French of Castleton. George attended Castleton Seminary (now Castleton State College) before enlisting as a Sergeant in the 11th Vermont Infantry, Co. C. in 1862. He was later promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded at the battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864 and killed at Petersburg. His wartime letters to his family are at the Vermont Historical Society. A lengthy account of his life and service was written by his sister Ella and appears in a booklet printed for Castleton's Memorial Day observance in 1885. |
