John Morrison, of Company B, 40th Infantry, died at his residence near this place on Thursday evening last, of Pneumonia. He has for several months labored under a severe affection (infection) of the lungs, but he remained with his company at his post of duty long after the critical state of his system should have warned (so as to seek …) where the relief and proper medical assistance which it was impossible for him to receive in the field. He returned home some four months ago, and after several weeks of confinement to his bed and house, he finally so far recovered as to be able to walk about. But some ten days before his death he was again taken down, and on Thursday evening last, he expired. Lieut. Morrison has for many years been a resident of this place and vicinity, and had, by his industry and his strict integrity in business won the esteem and affection of the whole community. In the summer of 1862, when the county loudly for aid in an effort of defeating the wicked attempts of traitors to dismember the Union of the States, he left a lucrative mercantile business, closed his store, and gave his energies in organizing a company, and although physically unfit to endure the hardships of a soldier's life, he freely periled all for his country's good. He has fallen; not as a brave soldier would wish to fall – on a victorious field of battle, but by the insidious hand of disease. Lieut. Morrison leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his untimely death." (Published in The Montezuma Republic newspaper, Montezuma, Iowa, on Wednesday, March 30th, [1864?]) ******************************************************* John Morrison married Sarah Gorsuch on the 3rd of Nov, 1845 near Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa. ***************************************************** John Morrison was mustered into the 40th Iowa Infantry as a 1st lieutenant on November 15, 1862. He became ill while the unit was serving in Helena, Arkansas, in the summer of 1863. His illness progressed to the point that his commanding officer requested that he be sent home so that he could receive proper care. He officially resigned his commission on March 3, 1864, and died on April 24, 1864.
