Morrison ( William Newton Morrison ), in Monmouth, Kansas, November 14th, 1980, Robert Morrison, aged 69 years, 1 month and 19 days. Robert Morrison was born in Dayton, Ohio, Sept. 25th 1821 and moved with his parents to Schuyler county, Illinois, in 1835. He was one of the pioneers of Iowa, moving to Mahaska county. He returned to Illinois, in 1852, and was married to Emily Chadsey, Dec.16th 1852. They moved to Iowa in 1856. They had born to them ten children, nine of whom survive them, and live in this vicinity. His wife (Emily E. Chadsey) died July 12 1884, at Montezuma, Iowa, and was the oldest sister of A.N. Chadsey ( Asaph N. Chadsey ). Father (Robert B.) Morrison was stricken with paralysis in 1887, and was soon afterwards brought to Kansas where his eldest son lived. He has gradually declined in health at 3 A.M. the 14 inst he died at the residence of his son, W.N. Morrison, at Monmouth, Kansas, as before stated. Father (Robert B.) Morrison, his wife (Emily E.) and most of his family were members of the Christian church in Montezuma, Iowa. Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Cherokee (Oklahoma, Indian Territory) , conducted by D.M. Harris, district evangelist. Soon returned to Illinois" In Sept 1850 US census, Robert Morrison, farmer, was living in Ashland Township (3N, 1W) Schuyler County, Illinois. Robert was 27, his 63 year old mother Mary was living with him. (Relative Benjamin Gorsuch, age 17, farmer, was living in the same household). Morrison served in the Civil War. Robert's military service is unknown. In the 1880 Census, he was living in Jackson Township, Poweshiek Co., IA and his occupation was a farmer. Burton is probably Barton (Robert Barton Morrison, Jr.) History of Poweshiek County, Iowa, Union Historical Company, Birdsall, Williams and Co., Des Moines, Iowa 1880 p. 658 "MORRISON, R. Farmer and stock dealer, Section 17, P.O. Montezuma. Was born September 25, 1821, in Dayton, Ohio, and lived there, attending the common schools, until the fall of 1835, when he removed to Illinois. He then engaged in farming, following that occupation until 1843, when he went to Mahaska county, Iowa, and there became engaged in the mercantile business, and also dealing in stock. In the spring of 1850, he went to California and commenced mining. Soon returned to Illinois and in 1854 again moved to Mahaska county. In 1862 he came to this county, and now owns an excellent farm of 520 acres, surrounded by a grove of maple trees. Has a good orchard of 1,000 trees. (Robert) Was married in Rushville, Schuyler county, Illinois, to Miss Emily Chadsey. They have nine children living: William N., Emma, John, Burton, Arthur, Annie, Lewis, Cyrus, and George. Three are deceased: Edwin J., Hugh S., and one unnamed. Mr. M is also engaged largely in grain dealing." [This section discusses the Indians that used the area before the Europeans arrived.] p.294 "At the time that the first settlements were made in Poweshiek county the Indians had not yet left for their new reservation. Mr. R Morrison, at present a resident of Montezuma, says that when he first came to the county the region of the country in the vicinity of the mouth of Sugar Creek was a favorite resort of numerous bands of them . They would form a temporary encampment and spend weeks in hunting, fishing and carousing. He was with them frequently on these hunting excursions, and says if there was any game in the country, they were sure to get it. On one occasion when they returned to camp they proceeded to prepare a meal. They took a raccoon that had been dead for several days and proceeded to skin it. The weather was warm and the animal was in an advanced state of decomposition. Mr. Morrison had a pressing invitation to remain for the feast, but it is needless to say he did not stay."
